Hey All!

Well I''ve found my way to this site and it''s help clear some things up for this new buyer! Ready to take the plunge...''course she''s been ready for awhile I''m just now movin'' on a ring!
21.gif
Anyway...I''ve tried to do some homework and was hoping for some advice on a couple areas...hopefully some of you will be able to point me in a better direction!

After a lengthy search, I''ve come across GOG (goodoldgold) and have been exceptionally surprised and impressed with both the candor and detailed information presented. Any experiences/opinions either good or bad that you can pass along? I''ve already dropped a note to Jonathan and was shocked to get such a rapid response back to a fairly detailed email.

Secondly...I''ve been looking for cushion cut diamonds...not a whole lot out there, especially in comparison to many of the more common shapes avaiable. Even before coming across GOG I''ve seen regent cut diamonds. Any opinions on these would also be welcomed!

That''s probably enough for now, again any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
sdtincup

Hi so fisrt off Regents ROCK... I originally started looking for cushions...but ended up with a Regent...through Good Old Gold I couldn't be happier with my ring or with the service I received...

You can do a search to find out more about Good Old Gold...or any of the other Vendors here...

I will post a pic of my ring...

I have also made a thread in the "show me the ring" forum called "Regent pics" with pics of other Regents

Here is a pic of my Regent ... .90 in Vatche truffle

Oh Welcome to P-scope

Hey Diane!

Thanks for the input...Jonathan's been exceptionally thorough and prompt with his replies to me and answering my questions. I'm leaning towards a regent shape right now if for no other reason then the choices for higher quality cushion cut diamonds is exceptionally thin.

Any recommendations on settings since you're helpin' out?

I'm looking for something that will take probably just under a carat center stone, platinum setting in a more filigree or antique style with accent stones (sapphire).

Again, thanks for the advice!!
Brian

Hi will try to help out...re setting...

First off minimal pronage...4 works well...

I will see if I can find some pics for you.

Most seting can be made to fit any center stone

hi sdtincup, i've been looking at settings for regents. here's 1 that will take probably just under a carat center stone, platinum setting in a more filigree or antique style but not for ur sapphire side stones. it can be found from here.

this site also has alot of antique styles that u can browse through

Hi I will post some setting I found on coastdiamond.com

If you find one or parts of one you like...let GOG know and they can steer you in the right direction...

On Many the prong of hte setting I have posted may need to be thinner to best showcase the Regent...

These are just ideas...with a more antique look...you can substitute sapphires for the sides

Also I think a very classy and elegant look that has a kind of older look to it is a center stone with baguettes either rect or tapered...

here is one

hey diane!

very cool picks, i'd seen some of these previously and do like them! that's pretty much the style types i've been looking at. i've looked at tacori, viachi, richard landi, gregg ruth, sheldon speye, simon g., coast diamonds, etc.

any comments or recommendations on any of those designers? i'm hopeful that if I can narrow it down that GOG would be able to get me a setting and take care of mounting, etc. i need to drop them an email and get some more info. as well.

thanks, b

HI I believe GOG has Sheldon Speyer...If you give htem an idea what you are looking for...eg show them this thread...I am sure they can get it /or make it for you..

There are a few guidelines for mounting regents (on GOG's site so I guess you muct have seen all that by now). If you are looking for antique style mountings with sapphires, how about french-cut sapphires? One source for such things is faycullen.com; did you see it?

This model has caught my eye as particularly suitable for the square outline of the Regent, and the execution of the details on that setting seems quite good (down to engraving and the setting of the sapphires). Fay's settings use techniques typical for older jewelry (these custom-cut colored accents being one) and rather hard to find elsewhere.

These are on Fay's list, there are other which can well accomodate a regent to choose from

HI Fay Cullen has nice stuff...the reason I did not post pics of their stuff...is that most of hte prongs are to think...yes the setting could be modified...

The top one you posted...if wanted...could be modified to have the french cut sapphires where the ron=und diamonds are now...thin out the prongs and simplify the setting...

They have nice setting but for regents I think simpler is better...especially minimal prongage

Excellent rings! I've seen a lot of them online, checked out so many sites now I'm confused! lol

Some of the other designers I'm considering are Tacori, Viachi, Richard Landi, Gregg Ruth, Sheldon Speyer, Simon G., Coast Diamonds, and D'Vatche. Good pointers on the moutnings and prongs...that's something I hadn't really considered with respect to what would show off a regent cut the best.

Attached is a Robbins Bros. design I really like...I found a couple others, but I'm not sure how to post additional photos...I'll try that in a minute. But I don't know how these will show off a regent. Decisions decisions...

Once again, fire away with the feedback!!! I'll post another pic or two here in a sec.

I liked this one also...VERY similar to the Robbins Bros. design...and the RB design I doubt I'd be able to get it without paying an arm and leg for it!!

And this was yet another one I found with a similar style. I think a higher mounting might show off the stone a bit better...but I have to keep my GF in mind...she's very, very active and a massage therapist...we both had some concerns about a setting that rises too high and potentially could get easily caught on things, banged, etc.

Opinions welcome!!!

Hi nice settings...I like the second one you posted best...I am sure you/GOG will be able to find you a comparable setting or you cna have it done custon with some/all of hte smae elements...

Keep in mind for a Regent you shouldn't have too much metal around the pavilion or girdle of the stone...it needs maximum light shining through to really perform at it's best. So no bezel or metal around the girdle, as open as possible is best.
2.gif

Good feedback! Mara...do you think the second one I posted would potentially work...I know it's a bit hard to see how much of the girdle on the side is exposed. It's a Richard Landi design...no idea how much it costs so who knows if it's something I'd even consider...but the style I like a lot! I know there's a lot of filigree settings...especially Fay Cullen...that have higher mountings on them and show off the diamonds better. But...not sure if it was this post or another...my GF and I have some concerns about something that might be too high, get snagged, bumped, banged, etc.

I would just have something custom made...Rhino's team should be able to accomodate or refer?

That way you can piecemeal bits and pieces of other settings but not be pidgeonholed into something you don't want (e.g. too much girdle coverage and too fat prongs etc).

2.gif
Plus most of the time custom ends up being cheaper than a name-branded setting, the markup on those is ridiculous!
1.gif

really? for some reason I'd always figured that it would costlier to have something made custom. so, so much I don't know! haha that particular setting I really like and think it would be great with sapphire side stones. but I suppose if I were to get something custome I do have a bit more freedom with the overall shape, etc. Has anyone here that you know of had GOG (Rhino) make something?

We had a ring custom and it was $2k for the entire thing which also had .72ctw of diamonds on it. The same ring essentially, but less platinum (Thinner) and less stones (.50ctw) as a name brand designer ring was $2400-2700 depending on where you shopped.

So yes in instances it can be cheaper. So before you spring for $2-3k or similar on a branded setting that isn't even 100% what you want, look into the custom option.
1.gif
Be sure that your designer/jeweler will listen to what you want and ensure that you get the desired end result.

Some other custom options also are Mark Morrell and Leon Mege who make AMAZING rings. There have been some recent works of theirs posted but I think they may be a bit backed up.

Wow...that's a decent bit of savings I'd say! I just got an email from Marie @ GOG and suggested Sheldon Speyer and Richard Landi...so I'll probably try and use something like that for a starting point for reference. It's truly incredible how many choices are out there...just when you think you've got a stone nailed down there's another basket of goodies to choose from!

-sdtincup

Sounds like your heading in the right direction...I am sure GOG can work with you to get the right setting fo rhte stone...while incorporating you design ideas...

As Mara mentioned...custom work can work out better for you...

Hey Diane & Mara,

Just a quick holiday fyi...just finished wrapping things up with GOG for the .87ct VS1/G that I'd been kicking around and got input in. Moving on to look at settings and the like! Anyway, just wanted to let you both know I sincerely appreciated the input and comments, I feel very comfortable with my selection and look forward to being able to post a success story here before too long! I'll make sure and have pics for you when things are mounted and good to go!

Thanks again and I hope you all have a tremendous holiday!

I like the settings you guys have talked about and have checked some of the site. Do you know if anybody does them in yellow gold. I''m going to do 3 round stones and want filigree. Any suggestions?
