Yesterday I went into a jewelry shop.. just to browse and get ideas. I saw a 1.61 round on a simple plain tiff. setting. I asked the ''expert jeweler'' if the diamond could be reset in another setting. He told me that there is a hefty charge becuase the diamond had already been cut to fit into the setting it was in? HUH? What in the owrld is he talking about? Is this even remotely true? Why would he have to cut a diamond to fit into a tiff setting. he mentioned this a few times, but reassured me not to worry becuase it could be done....

Accent diamonds are "cut to model" sometimes... but what you descrie is not even remotely related. Sounds like tasteless fiction

.... perhaps that salesperson has been told that the ring was custom made for the diamond (which at least might be true - not that it is) and somehow the message got twisted on the way.

Hmmm. this makes no sense at all.

The setting process usually involves ''cutting'' a little notch into each prong called a seat that the stone rests on when it''s set. These should each be cut individually to fit the stone in order to get the best possible fit and this can sometimes be time consuming. Perhaps this is what he was talking about.
