So I have fallen in love with this split-shank, 3 stone emerald cut setting:

https://mdcdiamonds.com/engagementdetails.cfm?Stock=ES605&Country=US

James Allen has told me they can make it for $4,700 which I can afford, however upon googling JA custom rings it seems many people here prefer other jewelers for custom pieces, is this something I should worry about?

James Allen quoted me .60 cut of pave set diamonds, each side stone of .23 cut (just over 1 total cut), white gold, the stones F/G in color, clarity VS 1/2.

What do you all think? Do I need to look elsewhere? They told me it would look identical to the ring in the link... But don't they have to change something to make it their own?

Help...

I don't know. My policy is to get three quotes for any custom work. And that's a lot of money.

I'd ask Engagement Rings Direct for a quote, at least.

And if it were me, I'd ask one other jeweler. Maybe Whiteflash too.

And no, that's a very common setting style. They won't have to change it.

They cannot make an exact copy of the diamond, or mdcdiamonds may get very upset with JA!

That said, as JA wont have all the specifications and only pictures to go on, it will end up being slightly different anyway.

Would you recognise these differences? Hard to say, but likely not.

As for custom work, I would ask as many online vendors as possible (getting quotes is reasonably easy and doesnt cost anything) and then ask PS for their views on quality and value for money.

I have previously dealt with denise from brian gavin and she provided me a quote in a couple of hours with full details of specification and example picture of very similar custom design they had produced before.

I think its also worth asking your local jewellers re custom work if you arent going to purchase the stone and setting from the same vendor. You can go view the final product without shipping back and forth, and actually describe any changes you may want when you look at the finished product.
