I recently purchased a cushion cut diamond with a halo. The band is very thin and the culet is very large. On that note the ring is going back and I have to start over. Having no knowledge of cushions and no measurements to input to a tool as the HCA. I am at a loss as what to look for. I know a well cut J color round will face up white. Is that the same with the cushions. As far as table size. What is the ideal size for a .75 or a 1ct. I am going crazy with this and it isn't even for me. I spend hours researching cushions cuts only to get more confused. Even aset images aren't a sure thing. Any advice would be greaqtly appreciated. Thanks is advance

Where are you looking at cushions?
Were you looking for antique style or modern?

I have been looking at alot of the vendors here. I emailed ERD, I read here on pricescope they are the cushion experts. I realized there are many different kinds of cushions. The ones I am interested in would not have a large culet. The one I purchased had a very large hole in the middle. As this diamond isn't for me I wasn't exactly sure what kind and not realizing how many different ones there are. All I had to go on was she liked the antique looking rings she saw at Zales. Also buying a setting on line is quite difficult who knew 2mm would be sooo thin. With all that being said I beleive she would like the cushion with the smaller facets and no culet, perhaps the crushed ice look. Whichever one sparkles the most.

HI Ashley,
I understand this can be frustrating- but I'd like to remove that aspect for you, if at all possible.
Can you tell us what you don't like about the diamond itself? ( ETA- I see the culet is what's bothering you)
Does the diamond have a GIA report?

IN terms of ASET and other tools like HCA ( which is not applicable on a cushion)- they do work, but figuring out how the results will match to an individual's taste is a vital part of these tools- if you want to use them.
I feel what you see with your eyes is paramount- hence my questions about what you see- and also to identify the type of stone you're looking at.

The diamond does have a GIA cert. It is actually quite nice but the person receiving it didn't like the culet. If it wasn't for the hole she probably would have kept it. I am the one who didn't like the band they said it was a 2mm but it looked thin as a piece of string. I did find some guidelines for the table (mid to high 50's) depth (mid 60's). I am looking in those ranges. Also what do you think of the J color will that be to yellow. Please advise.

In terms of the J color- has she looked at a lot of diamonds in different shades? And if she has, has she been able to notice the color in stones of I-J?
Some people can't even see the shade- and others that can actually prefer it to a more icy white stone.
Without a doubt, if someone loves J colors, they're going to save a bundle over a higher color- or get a larger diamond for the same money.
For this reason, it's a very good idea to see if she can see color- and what she things.
What's the color and clarity of the stone you have in your possession.
As far as the open culet- most antique style cushions have that.

IN terms of understanding crushed ice- the entire subject is not well defined- what exactly is crushed ice for example?
I would strongly encourage looking at videos from more than one vendor to get a fuller understanding of what a lovely crushed ice ( as I define it) stone can look like.

Nice videos and lots of info. I have emails out to GOG, they have limited internet hours this week.. They seem to show every image possible for their diamonds. So if I am getting a cushion and pix are important they are probably the ones to go with.
