1) I''m in love with pillowy, antique-y cushions with large cut facets (definitely do not prefer the "crushed ice" effect). Our budget is about 7k (1500 of which I''d like to set aside for the setting), so we''re looking at between 1 and 1.5 ct, with emphasis on quality, not size. I was recently sent a photo of this stone....any opinions on it? I''ve asked for more photos and information, but I believe it''s a 1.2 ct, G, VS2. L/W is 1.15?

2) Meanwhile...proving that "ideal" numbers don''t mean they suit your preference, I came across this very long cushion on Leon Mege''s site. Any thoughts as to the l/w here? Would you say 1.4? http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=280

3) And does a higher l/w ratio affect price in any way? How about light performance? I just don''t have any idea of how a longer cushion affects anything else, frankly, just that I seem to prefer them. In the end of course, that''s what matters...

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I think that is a very pretty cushion in the picture, the one on LM's website is unusual, I haven't personally seen one like that before. L/W ratio is generally down to personal preference, I don't think it affects price usually and the performance is down to the other proportions of the diamond and how well they work together.

Here is a shape selector tool you can use, I would think the LM cushion is greater than 1.4 at a guess.

Looks like a pretty stone to me but I''m not too sure if the facets appear large enough for your tastes.

Have you checked out any of the signature GOG cushions for comparison?

The length to width ratio of a cushion cut diamond does not affect price, the length to width ratio is primarily a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer a cushion cut diamond with an outline that is more square and other people prefer something more rectangular. Cut quality such as proportions, polish, symmetry and optical symmetry do affect price dramatically.

Dmitri, glad you commented on the facets, since my gut is telling me this is less "chunky" in appearance than I prefer. Though it is a pretty stone.

Any thoughts on question #2?

Thanks also to Lorelei and Todd.

That cushion on the LM site is surely more than a 1.4 in L:W ratio. It is very, very unusual.

I also prefer fairly elongated cushions. My cushion (in the avatar) has a 1.24 L:W ratio.

Edited -- sorry, double post.

I second DiamondFlame. Call Jon at Good Old Gold and let him know what you want for a chunky cushion. His new signature line is just awesome.

If you can stretch your budget at all this stone is nice from good old gold

and perhaps you can ask jon if he can re-create that setting and how much it would be as a package deal?

I too love pillowy cushions, except I was looking for one with sharp crisp facets. Anyway, I think that stone on Leon's site is a rarity, a beauty at that. It must be at least 1.4.
In my journey, I saw many pillowy stones that were crushed ice with no distinct faceting visible. I had a hard time finding the size I wanted in that longer L to W ratio. The stone I ended up with still isn't as rectangular as I wanted. Oh well. And no the shape has nothing to do with the price. I found the better stones were mostly the squarer cut stones, but that could have been because there were so few on the market like I wanted. From my experience, you might have to look for a while. I sourced my stone through Mark at ERD and Leon made my ring.
Have you thought about calling Mark at Engagement Rings Direct - he has helped a lot of PS'ers find a cushion. And yes, Jon at GOG might can help too. Good luck!
editied to add my stones dimensions
10.08 x 8.59
4.26 ct.
it's deep at 6.28mm (I think)
