How do cushions face up compared to rbs? I''m curious because I''ve seen two 2-carats recently. One was smaller than a similarly-sized rb, and one was quite a bit bigger.

Usually smaller. But a really shalllow cushion can still look nice so a larger cushion is possible. Usually a 1 carat square cushion seems to be 6 x 6 (similar to a less than 64% depth asscher of 1 carat).

Is the smaller one likely to be better cut then?

No.

I'm NOT a cushion expert but I am interested in them so I've read quite a few of the threads. What makes one cushion better than another is largely a matter of personal preference. Don't get me wrong there are some cut guidlines (no huge tables for example) but it's largely a matter of the TYPE of cushion, the plot of the cushion and most importantly... how it looks to you. How it performs is the most important thing.

they are exactly what you experienced. I think mine faces up about the same maybe a little bigger, but not much.... a 9mm round is about 63.8 square mm on the girdle. Mine is just over 9.5x7.5 which is about 72 but then there are corners not taken into consideration like on the round. I imagine it''s pretty close but a round is long both ways where mine is narrower in one direction and longer in another. There are deep cushions that are amazing but face up smaller, and there are shallow cushions that look *huge* and are fairly brilliant, maybe not as much colored light, but still beautiful..

Why? (Sorry for the naive questions.)

Not naive-- cushions are like poems to me. There are all different types of poems, each type has its characteristics.. and they can't really be quanitified too much. You just like what you like in poetry... and you know a good poem when you hear it. They are very personality filled stones with individual characterstics that makes them difficult to pin down completely. Although Sara has done a good job of doing so.
