Cushion or round?

I know this is a topic that''s been done quite a few times on here before, but I haven''t seen a poll for it.

All things being equal, what do you like better - a well-cut cushion or an ideal round?

I''m doing a little upgrade thang and I just can''t make up my mind! Currently my stone is a 1 carat EC champagne with very little life. I have a square H&A RHR that totally puts it to shame.

I selected round, because although I salivate over cushion cuts, they tend to appear smaller than the round of comparable size. A closer vote for me would be a cushion in a halo setting. I love the way cushions look in halos

I do love rounds, but I would not want one for an ering; I would prefer the less common cushion (even though a PS quality RB is uncommon, I just prefer the different shape of the cushion). I would totally love a cushion from ERD in a halo setting. And for the right hand, I'll take a round in a sapphire halo.

Hera - Right now I''ve kinda got my mind working in this split-shank pave halo setting direction. With a wedding band that works with it. Mmmm.

Why..., I think a nicely cut Cushion is a work of art!
There are so many variations out there..., so be careful!

If you have patience to search..., you could even find a cushion which spreads (or even more) as a round and still is gorgeous!

Wow, I am amazed that cushion is winning. I voted cushion. But to me, it has to have the right proportions of l/w. I don''t like them when they are too narrow.

I appreciate the way cushions vary a bit in shapes and cuts and those of us who love them can almost always find something in these variations that are our own personal ideal.

Of course we can with RBs too.....but, I think we''re more educated here on PS about RB cuts and it can sometimes get in the way of appreciating some variations from what is often considered "ideal" at least *I* let it get in the way for myself.

Couldn''t agree more! It took me 2 months to find my stone. I wouldn''t say it''s perfect, but good enough for me, and HOPEFULLY her

I like the one you posted as well, diamondseeker2006. I personally prefer square and rectangle shapes, but since you currently have an EC and a square, perhaps a round would be a good as your next purchase.

I realize you can''t promote your own stones on here, and you probably only sell through specific high end dealers anyway, but I cannot recall that we have ever identified any sources of cushions that are this well cut. I''d love to know if you or anyone else can direct us to them.

This is the very dilemma that I am facing, except that I''m trading in my Jubilee (like the square H&A). I could not decide between a RB and a cushion and in the end decided to get the cushion. I just prefer the square outline, hence I have an EC e-ring. I have owned RBs in the past and still have smaller ones as earring and a pendant which are ideal cut stones but nothing gets my heart rate going as much as square stones. Have you seen GOG''s cushions? They are the modern variety but are well cut with chunky faceting.

Ditto what Diamondseeker just said. I too, wish DiaGem would direct us to a cushion vendor that sells those old school cushions. My hair is going gray searching for one and is compounded by the fact that the last one I called in didn't match it's GIA facet plot - it was beautiful, no doubt, but I was losing sleep over purchasing something that I wanted to upgrade before I ever received it. Wish DiaGem would put me out of my misery and show me the way. If I wanted a round, this would be soooo much easier.

I don't want to insult anyone here, but Boston Jeff's cushion was the only one that approaches the symmetry and excellence in cut that I would personally prefer. I guess that would be the one to which you refer.

I agree with you. I don't know how many people have attempted to copy that stone, but I would venture to guess that it's A LOT! I'm guilty myself. Funny story, I called Mark T at ERD and started describing the cushion I was looking for, I then told him that I had found a picture on Pricescope and would like to send it to him. He chuckled and replied, "let me guess, is it Boston Jeff's stone?". I just laughed. I got the impression that he receives numerous calls a week about that stone. I have to say though, that for as beautiful as that stone is, I don't think it's the norm. I think Jeff looked for that stone for about 4 months until he found it, and even then I think he got a little lucky. I gave up the search after 2 months. While there were slight things I wished were different about mine, I had to draw the line somewhere. Mark told me that with a stone like that you can get lucky, or wait a year until you find it. He also shared with me that it's really not a $ issue, it's an inventory issue, and there just aren't many of those stones out there.

Unless you are talking about significant size stones..., I must disagree!

If you (a vendor) are in any kind of cooperation with cutters..., and $$$ is no issue..., I believe any type of cut can be pretty much duplicated!

The thing is..., you need to identify a great cut and mark the info. (facet arrangements, facet angles, etc, etc...) down so you can pass it to the right cutter for future use!

The problem is..., not all vendors identify a great cut considered by their private clients! And ones the rock is sold..., its gone!

Now that I have seen/own both a cushion and an ACA round, I would still have to say...

Cushion.

I love my cushion...everything about it and I wouldn''t change a thing. After over a year and a half of having it, it still draws me in and hypnotizes me in a way that the round just hasn''t. Maybe because I''ve seen so many fantastic round images on here and am more familiar with the faceting patterns. There are just so many more surprises with my cushion.

I think the key is to find one that speaks to you...there is such a variance!

Cushions are intriguing to me, however, so I''d be tempted to get one for a RHR (since I wouldn''t want to upgrade my eng. ring).

I love them because they are so different. I do not know anyone else (besides pricescopers) that has a cushion.

I get stopped all the time because of my ring!
