Hi- I'm newly engaged and my ring was made by a local jeweler from a loose stone (I chose) and set in platinum (bezel). The jeweler is reputable but our town is small- I went to high school with her son. My concern is the cut and table to depth ratio, I went with cushion because it was more unique than round brilliant and obviously less expensive. I'm not interested in the semantics of crushed ice look or that kind or aesthetic. I understand what this type entails. Out of 9 or 10 stones - I chose a cushion modified brilliant - GIA specs: 2.01 carats, G color, VS2 clarity - very good polish, good symmetry and medium blue fluorescence. Measurements are 8.06 x. 7.47 x 4.39 mm and proportions are 74% table to 58.8% pavilion length. Very thin girdle thickness and extremely thick (faceted) lower girdle or half length. I'm scared we were taken advantage of and that I got a bad stone. No I don't plan on selling to and I am happy with the stone - not the setting so much - I'd like any knowledgeable insight on whether the stone itself Is of a good quality - even if it's not.

Secondly: Im not very pleased with the setting. It's very chunky but I need something sturdy and low set because I work with my hands and I haven't quite given up on the idea of not wearing it all the time . I wanted a very octagonal bezel box setting- with the stone being somewhat rectangular I want it turned 90 degrees and reset in platinum octagonal bezel box on cushion set with hard enamel shoulders or a very geometric bezel with sharp edges and small prongs. Also I should note I'm in art school and taking a good bit of metalsmithing and there are already a few saw marks in the platinum. Any insight on the would be great. Thanks!

I guess I'll post that the stone was $19, 300

Really can't tell much from your photos. The table is very large - I generally like my cushions to be in the mid 50s or lower for table. What is the depth %?

In terms of pricing, it isn't fully out of the norm but not a deal by any means.

The setting doesn't look chunky but can't tell much.

Here is GIA report, I wanted a rectangular shape but was not aware of consequences with this cut

You didn't post the price. So I have no idea if you got ripped off.

It's very hard to evaluate anything about the stone based on your pictures. The table is well.. huge. Coupled with the shallow depth though it doesn't really bode that well. It's a bit of a pancake. STILL you can't judge fancies from their numbers so it could be a nice stone despite the numbers. And it does mean that it probably faces up very large for it's carat weight.

Other than that the color and clarity are very good. And it is graded by GIA. All good things.

I tried to look for comps. But diamonds are priced very much according to how well they are cut. On average G VS2 cushions run around 17-21K. Actual price depends on cut.

I couldn't find anything at all with similar dimensions to yous, so that made comparisons hard. Still I was able to find a few with similar numbers, if you paid around 18-20k then you got what you paid for. If you paid more than that... then... you might be been able to do better elsewhere. But... you love the stone so I'm sure what it matters.

As for the setting. I actually adore the shape. But if you aren't happy with it... well, then do something about it.

Sorry, stone was 19,740 we paid 18740 for cash no tax.... With setting it appraised for 26,637.000 w tax. I think I will count my blessings and hold out for a different setting on an anniversary? Ha maybe our 1 year...

So does that price include the setting?

Comps:
http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-5079604-2.02-carat-Cushion-diamond-G-color-VS2-Clarity.aspx?sku=5079604&utm_source=pricescope.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=pricescope.com Same facet pattern G VS 2.02 and also has the 'pancake' issue with the numbers (though not as extreme). Polish and symmetry are the same as yours. So this is the best comp I could find.

Price: $18,685.00
Bank Wire Price: $18,124.45

Just for the stone. So... it sounds like you did fine, price wise, if that price includes the setting. And if you love the stone, that's what matters.

Unfortunately the setting was not included but it was actually a bit less than expected. I love the stone - it looks both faceted and crushed depending on the angle and the shape is so different - rectangular. It's beautiful in the sunlight and I get stopped all the time- not bragging - it's probably because it's so unusual. I just didn't do much homework and felt some guilt over not knowing if we chose well. I feel a lot better thank you and you're right I love it so it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the comps I think we did fine.

Also, it's Kimberly certified which I hope actually means lower incidence of conflict

Hi MG,

I also think you did fine for the price you paid, especially from a brick and mortar jeweller. That must be fun getting stopped all the time by folks attracted by the sparkle! Many congratulations on your engagement and enjoy your lovely ring! :wavey:

Enjoy your new ring!

+1 on both Lorelei's and Gypsy's comment
Getting stopped so people can ogle at the show stopper is such a compliment. Job well done.

That is an amazing spread!!

Congratulations on your engagement and your ring! If you do not love the setting, you can always change it. It sure is a pretty and different stone and it sometimes does not matter how perfect they are if they symbolize something important to you. My engagement ring stone is nothing I would buy myself but I do love it. Enjoy it in good health.
