Does anyone know what the most common cut for a modified cushion brillant stone (that''s about a carat in size if that makes a difference)? I''m sure that my SO just recently looked at stones and I''m hoping he''s picked or will pick a square-looking cushion. Are more rectangular shapes common? Of course, I e-mailed our jeweler also, but since I won''t here from him till Monday at the earliest, I thought I''d try here too.

Thanks for *any* feedback! A bit nervous about my ring now!

I am not sure how significant my research is but I think around 10% of cushions are squarish. I did a search for all cushions and then added one criteria of length to width ratio under 1.07. The result set turned out to be roughly 10%.

Have you seen cushion brillants verus cushion modified brillants? Cushion modified brillants may have a crushed ice look which many do not prefer.

I haven''t as SO is the one doing this mostly on his own. I liked the look of the modified brillant I saw in person...just want to avoid getting a rectangular shape...

Hint to him that you like a squarish diamond to avoid disappointment. Find a photo of the ring you love and show him - "I love how this setting looks. The square shape of the diamond really appeals to me."

My boyfriend started his search on his own too but he got excited and told me. I was always saying that I wanted to be completely surprised. We ended up working together in finding the diamond and designing the ring although he was the primary communicator with our vendors. After all this, we did a little switch. I am not communicating directly with our diamond vendor but him with the ring designer. If I was to start all over, I would be completely involved right from the begining. The process is too fun for him to go at it alone :P

You can also send him to Mark at Engagement Rings Direct or Jonathan at Good Old Gold. They will help him find you a beautiful cushion!

Thanks for the suggestions! I think it''s too late to look elsewhere since we''re already working with a Boston jeweler (they do have a good reputation though). I sent an e-mail directly to the jeweler since I don''t know if my SO already picked out a stone. The one that the jeweler had there that we saw on our preliminary trip did look square so I think he does sell that type. It doesn''t have to be an exact square for me to be happy...just not too rectangular if you know what I mean. I''m being a bit flaky right now. Thanks for your advice, though!

Square cushions are a bit harder to find. especially those with a 1:1 ratio. When my fiance was looking he wanted one that was a perfect square and it took him 2 months to find it (although his criteria of it being ex/ex also made the search difficult). if you''re looking for a square i would recommend staying around 1-1.05 ratio. To me, anything above that starts to look rectangular. have you seen them in person? i would definitely check out different ratios so you can find out at what point the cushion becomes too rectangular for you. good luck!
