Cushion Cut - Hearts & Arrows Question

I posted on here a few weeks ago and the PS community has been great. I was originally going in rather blind to this whole experience (not that I am that much better right now) and I had several very nice stones referred to me, including a couple of Antique/Chunky style cushions.

I went looking earlier today and have personally found that I like the more splintered look in a cushion as opposed to the chunky style.

My budget is about $10,500 but I can stretch it a little bit if need be if something really stands out. I’d prefer to be around 1.4-1.5ct, but I also understand that weight alone does not determine size with a preference to VSI2 or better, but again I would consider an eye clean SI1 if it was a great stone.

I have come across several pages listing their own versions of Hearts & Arrow Cushions. Is this style of cushion going to be more of the splintered type that I had been attracted to?

Earlier I had been referred to this stone:

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=sig&track=NavDiaSigCU#diamonds_pid=LD04192433

I have also come across others including

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.253-g-vs1-cushion-diamond-ags-104066027011 (This one in particular seems rather rectangular. I am not sure how that will affect the look of the stone. From the picture it seems to look very nice, but again the image showing the "hearts" does show several asymmetries)

I was hoping for some feedback from the PS community and maybe a nudge towards other nice cushions that are not of the antique/chunky variety. Thank you all so much!

check out good old gold as well for nice cushion cuts.

whiteflash does not stock any in-house cushion cuts, so thats a bit unfortunate.

Hi Matt,

The BN cushion might be a lovely stone, but personally I don't find those images to be sufficient for a complete analysis of the personality and light performance of this diamond. The BG cushion should be beautiful, concerning the asymmetries seen in the h&a image, you would probably never notice them in reality but ask Brian or Lesley if they have anything else in the pipeline that might suit you. The BG cushion might fall somewhere in between the chunky and more modern cushion, these sometimes have the more splintery faceted look you want, again Brian or Lesley would be able to better describe the stone's personality to you, they might be able to suggest something else that suits your needs through a discussion.

I looked back on some earlier threads of yours, did you ever have any luck speaking to GOG or ERD about sourcing you a cushion? Whiteflash too might be able to find you something on request or B2C diamonds.

I did speak with ERD, and they are fantastic. That is where I decided that I am leaning more toward the splintered look than the antique / chunky style. I am trying to keep my options open with this type of purchase though, which is why I was curious to get some info re: the H&A as well as some input on other stones people have come across that have the more splintered look.

BGD cushions dimensions are the diagonal by the length. It is a square, not a rectangle.

I'm not sure I follow. I thought 7.25 x 6.06 x 4.42 was LxWxD

The longest measurement is the diagonal.

Thanks for the info Julie. I emailed BG with some questions and want to call GoG soon.

I'd love to see some suggestions from the community pointing me towards some particular stones.

I was just looking on b2c and although I didn't find anything I think it was worthwhile. I keep seeing different stones with great ASETs and I was almost taking that for granted until I looked at some of the ASETs provided on that site.

Hi Matt,

I haven't come across anything yet that might suit your needs, but I will keep looking for you as time permits and I know the others will too. I have found some with a more splintery faceted look but the light return did not appear to be good from the info I had. I am sure we will find something, it might just take a little time. A skilled vendor on the hunt too might speed things up considerably and it sounds as if you have that in motion, the right diamond will present itself!

Lorelei, thank you as well. The amount of help that people on here offer up is incredible.

So far from what I have seen I think my two leading contenders are

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.253-g-vs1-cushion-diamond-ags-104066027011

&

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11990/ - My only concerns w/ this stone are the fact that there seems to be a lot going on in the GIA cert as far as the number / location of the inclusions. From what I can tell the ASET looks rather good, however there does seem to be a couple of spots w/ leakage. It does perform much better than others that I have seen as best as I can tell)

====

I am going to try to contact BG & GoG respectively regarding these, but do you have any thoughts between them? I know you had mentioned contacting BG earlier regarding that stone.

Thanks for your kind words Matt, they are such a great bunch here!

Both diamonds should be beautiful performers, also if you were seriously interested in the GOG cushion, Jon might make a short video for you on request so you can see if it will show the type of personality you are looking for. He used to offer this service, not sure if he still does but no harm in asking. The ASET looks great, with the areas you are concerned with, just ask Jon and he will give you an honest opinion. Personally I would be very interested in both, I would imagine the h&a cushion might show more of a less ' splintery' look due to the faceting of the stone, but it depends on what is meant by splintery and how splintery you want it so to speak! I think a chat with both vendors will give you a better idea of which to choose between them, or whether it's on with the search.

That 1.5 is gorgeous!

Thank you, you are making me feel good after making such a big purchase! I have been driving myself (and the PS community) nuts trying to make a decision so i just pulled the trigger. I'm hoping when I take it in to be looked at by my jeweler he is excited about it too. If all goes well he said he will have it mounted in about 10 business days and then I'd love to share the finished product.

Wow, looks beautiful!
