I''m about 2 months out from purchasing an engagement ring and really like the looks of the Cushion Cut and some of the Oval Cuts i''ve seen. I''m steering away from the Princess and Round cut because I want to have something a bit different. My question is am I going to sacrifice some brilliance and fire with a cushion cut or are they just as brilliant as the round/princess cuts?
Also, is the Cushion diamond AGA "cut grade" based off of the round grading chart, princess grading chart, or the Oval chart. I haven''t seen a grading chart specifically for the Cushion cut yet. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
Clint

Cushions are not as brilliant as ideal cut rounds - as a rule. I would rather compare them with ovals from this point of view.
Here's one such stones with quite a few light retun tests done. I suspect it does 'perform' quite well among cushion cuts, and it certainly does compared to ovals. (WWW )

Also, some would consider the Regent cut close to what one would expect from a 'cushion' (it surely is a rather rounded square), and regents can match the optics of a round.

I do not know wether you could use the AGA (and which) for the cushion cut, but a PM to "Old Miner" (Dave Atlas) could clarify this. However, there are allot of cut models going by the name of "cushion" so I am not very sure wether one chart would fit them all.

Hoping this helps...

Hello,

I am a cushion fan too. They are less brilliant than a round or princess, but the modern cut cushions that I've seen still sparkle quite a bit -- much more than I thought they would.

There is an article at professionaljeweler.com that describes it like this:

"Cushion cuts are less brilliant than modern round brilliant diamonds, but are more dispersive (which refers to the separation of white light into spectral colors). Antique and modern cushion cuts are virtually the same, though newer technology means today’s cushion cuts have better symmetry, proportions and polish."

Good luck in your search!

do you know what online diamond suppliers would have the Regent cut diamonds? I have looked at Whiteflash and Dirt Cheap and didn't see the Regent. Thanks again for the response!

I could be wrong, but I think Good Old Gold has the regent...
