I''m trying to sort my way through two stones...one I posted in this forum earlier (with idealscope, take a look, i''m looking for opinions!)....and have a question.

The one I''ve posted has a l/w of 1.06:1, the other one is more rectangulr...1.22:1

Is it true that the bowtie effect is more noticable, the more rectangular stones get? It seems to be that way. Is the bow tie undesirable simply because of the look, or does it also affect light return/brilliance/fire etc.?

Thanks everyone! Hopefully i''ll be able to choose one of these two and then my serach will be over!

The bow tie is actually a "good thing" and a necessary thing...but you need to decide if it is visually appealing to you. I hate them and that''s why I couldn''t go for a lot of fancy shapes and purchased a square cushion...I read that *all* fancy shapes have them...but I''m not sure how that''s true....my stone certainly doesn''t. you will see it more in rectangular shapes...but I also want to point out that on a lot of old fashioned cushions, you;ll see that dark cross which is part of the facet pattern...I''m certainly no expert and welcome any corrections...

If you want to do this yourself... you''re gonna need to see plenty of examples and compare lots of proportion reports.

Judging a fancy shape really needs to be seen...

So best to do is either get the assistance of an expert, or look at plenty of stones, make notes and then see what your preference is.

Thanks for the comments...MMM, how is the bow tie a good thing? Just curious.

People like the H&A''s stars in rounds - the bow tie is the same thing, but bigger and more localised. it is sometimes a sign that the proportions for the rest of the stone are right
