Hello everyone,

I normally post over on LIW, as I''m still waiting for the FF to propose, but we''ve recently began looking at diamonds/rings, and we''re in need of some expert help/opinions!
FF, and I are both diamond newbies, and although we''ve looked at various sites hoping to find the answers to our questions (what''s the best depth % for cushions, etc.), we''re finding it all a little overwhelming! That being said, I''ve fallen in deep-like with a cushion over at James Allen..

Shape: Cushion
Carat weight: 0.60
Cut: Ideal
Color: F
Clarity: VS2
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 68.9%
Table: 65.0%
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle:
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.07*4.76*3.28
Ratio: 1.07

What do you think? Any good?
What exactly would be the ideal depth/table/girdle/etc. for a (chunky) cushion? IS there such a thing?

Thanks so much in advance!
(I apologize for my know-nothingness).

1) Have you seen it in person? Judging by plot and the picture ,depth, large table and VG/VG Symmetry and Polish this is a modern 4 main cushion brilliant. Could be really nice contender if you like modern 4 main cushion cut diamonds.

I would request an ASET from JA and post it here so we can tell you more.

2) There are no ideal numbers for cushions, expecially not modern cut ones as the table can be large in these and the crown can still be high even with a large table. I''m not sure JA does sarin''s but knowing the crown height % would tell us a little more as crown height''s >15% are are a good indicator of stones cut that may have good fire and chunky flash.

3) For "know nothingness" the picture of this cushion is especially pretty so kudos to you for picking a potential winner. I would like to see though about those darks arrows and if they remain dark when viewing the stone IRL the ASET will tell us a little more about that.

4) Girdle is thick to very thick, I would suggest have JA check how many parts of the girdle are thick.
From comparison to other 0.6Ct cushion with similar depth and LW you are not hiding weight in the girdle but you don''t want very thick girdle in too many spots.

5) You are paying a premium for F colour and as long as you really like icy white and are willing to pay more for it that is fine as well.

Regards,

CCL

Its hard to tell from that picture so what I would do in the first instance is request an ASET image and another clearer photo from JA, also a Sarin scan to get the crown height which is helpful. Is this the sort of cushion you are looking for?

Girdle - as CCL rightly says, ask for the gemologist at JA, Julianna, to inspect it for you to see how much of the girdle is in fact very thick, too much can waste weight in some cases if a large area is very thick, so if it is just in small areas its nothing to worry about.

I''m not sure what kind of cushion I''m looking for, exactly.

FF is the type of guy who would normally walk into a chain store, and pick out what he likes best, but (bless his heart) he''s willing to research/learn about diamonds for my sake. We only began looking last night (which is probably why we''re so overwhelmed), and the cushions just kind of called to me/us..

Thanks for your help (you, too, CCL!

), and I''ll try to get an ASET, ASAP!
