What percentage of the cost of your ENTIRE engagement ring was spent on just the setting?

Or, if you''re married, what percentage of the total cost was spent on the setting and band, excluding the diamond?

Would you ever spend the same amount (or close to the same amount) you paid for the diamond on a new setting and band?

My ering setting (without diamond) is a delicate diamond halo and was about 9% of the total cost of that ring. If you factor in the wedding band, we spent 16% of the budget on the rings without the diamond.

I think the size of someones budget would change that ratio. If I had $2,000 to spend on an ering, it could make sense that half of that budget would be allocated to just the setting. But if you're spending $10,000, it would be overkill to spend $5,000 on a setting.

I am buying a Tacori setting in platinum so the cost of the setting is 30% of the total cost of the E''ring. I assume that is a little higher than the normal amount since I would have spent 10-15% had she not fallen in love with the Tacori design. BTW total price is going to be around $15,000

Thanks for the replies!

If you paid $5900 for a diamond, would you ever consider paying $4000 for a designer setting and matching band? That seems nuts to me, but that's the cheapest I can get this setting and band. For that kind of money though, I could upgrade the diamond instead. Yeesh

We spent about 1/10 of the budget on the setting. This was based entirely upon the silly prices for gold. Instead, we determined we would rather focus our resources on the main stone.

My setting and band were 26.5% if my entire set.

Can you get any of it pre-owned? My wedding band is pre-owed. I saved a bundle that way.

Over 50% and no regrets.

I can''t remember the exact costs but your numbers sound close to what mine were. At the time, we had talked to a couple jewelers and got quotes to custom create it but those turned out to be even more than the designer branded rings or I simply didn''t have confidence that they would make it right.

I don''t regret spending that much on the setting and band because I got exactly what I wanted and there was no worry that it woudn''t turn out as expected.

Get what you want

my setting and band are 25% of the total cost of the set, i don''t see myself spending the diamond price on a whole new setting and band, i''d rather just buy a few stacking bands instead, provides the variety i yearn for at times

My setting was really cheap AUD700, and I don''t know what the diamond melee are, but they look just as bright white and sparkly as the centre diamond (D colour).

I think the SA heavily discounted it cos she knows that they are making 100% profit on the diamond anyway (my FI went retail).

mmm... Total cost was $19.5K, most of that spent on the diamonds on the ering and band.

If the band is going to be included in the price I would have / will spend 45% on the setting and the band. 65% on the center stone.

My setting for my ering and my wedding band accounts for 30%. Would I pay close to the same or the same amount for diamond and setting? It would depend on how elaborate the setting is and what metal.

I''m a size girl, so I''d always pick a larger diamond with a cheaper setting.

Gosh, I always seem to be different.
I paid only 2% of the whole budget on the titanium tension setting.

To me the ideal setting would be invisible; the diamond would just float there.

I figure the more I spend on the setting the less I can spend on the diamond, and AFAIC, it is all about getting the best diamond my money can buy.
To me the setting's job is to keep the diamond available for viewing and protecting it from loss.

That said, do what makes you happy.
