What you are looking at is the owner's coat of arms engraved on the top of the (quite large) sapphire. I guess give the lapidary props for finding a way to charge the customer buku bucks and salvaging an otherwise poor quality gem with a window big enough to drive through

Personally I'd put a cool red enamel cup underneath, but you could do blue to hide the window.

Well to be fair, and I love a saturated, well-cut blue sapphire, it's a bit like criticizing a sports car for having so little luggage space. I think it's a well-executed and effective use of the imperfect material. Could be used as a wax seal. It's not a bug; it's a feature. You need a giant table to create this effect and a pale tone to keep the carving from disappearing, visually. If you do not intend to highlight or enjoy the intaglio, then I would skip this ring and go another direction entirely.

Surprised by all the hate on this. It's basically a signet ring made of sapphire. I would wear this! Even with that bouquet of wilting male genitalia at the top of the Coat-of-Arms.

The face-up size is huge. The auction estimate is very low. It is super-shallow -- could almost have been a portrait cut. (A re-cut would give you melee.)

Hope I'm not spoiling anyone's stalking but I did not perceive that @BoSnerdley was super-jazzed about it. If I am "outing" this and ruining someone's morning, let me know quick and I will delete most of this post.

I agree and think it's cool! Not my style but a really neat idea and well executed
