I bought a diamond 3 weeks ago and last night I slightly banged it on the stove. I was just throwing something in the garbage and I turned around and it hit the stove, NOT EVEN VERY HARD!!!! Now there is a crack between two of the prongs. Was it set wrong or is the stone just a bad cut? It's hard for me to believe that such a slight bang would crack it. It is a round stone, 1.5 K and has six prongs. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Do you have insurance? Is the stone certified? If so, look at it and see what it says about the girdle thickness.

Very sorry to hear this.

Diamonds can fracture if they are hit just right (or wrong).

Can you post a pic?
What clarity was it?
Do you have a report that shows the inclusions you could post a pic of?

Because we wanted to save money (ha ha) it is not certified...dumb I know!!! We have not insured it yet either...I''m just wondering if it is going to crack every time it touches something!

It is not certified...I don''t have a picture of it yet, I''m afraid I''m just going to have to live with it and not wear it much so that in one year I don''t have a ring full of cracks. It just sucks cuz I''ve only had it a few weeks!

I don''t think I would just leave it as is ... if you''re able to ... perhaps you should have a jeweler or someone professional polish out the crack/chip so that it''s smooth again ... even if it reduces carat size a smidge. Then immediately INSURE the stone. It''s not too late. You could add it to a rental insurence policy, a homeowners insurence policy or have a freestanding "jewelry only" policy.

If it is a stone that''s prone to chip/crack etc ... ALL THE MORE REASON to insure asap.

I hope pros will weigh in ... as I''m just a fellow jewelry lover ... but a cracked stone is bound to catch on things, hair, fiber etc ... and crack even further as stuff pulls against'' the damaged area. Polishing it smooth again seems prudent in my non-expert opinion.

Good luck!

Maybe crack wasn''t the right word...it''s more like a hairline fracture and it is inside of the stone, between 2 of the prongs...

Are you sure it wasn''t there when you bought it but are now just noticing it?

Could it have been set poorly, or do I just have really bad luck? I''m afraid to wear it now. No one will can really see it, but I stare at the damn thing everyday and it will bother me

Well, that is another thing, I am not 100% sure that I did it or if it was there when we bought it and didn''t notice it

At this point, I don''t see you having anything to lose. I''m doubtful that a light knock like that really did it, but I suppose it''s possible. If it were me, I''d be on my way to the jewelers, to question all this. If you are adamant enough, they may just replace it to make you happy. If they do, just make sure you get a certified stone, have it independantly appraised, and insure.

Yup, definitely take it to the jeweler who you purchased the ring from and see what they say. Hopefully it can be polished out, but sounds like it was there to begin with??

regardless of if it was there before or not (which you can't really know at this point), you need to get it assessed and fixed if possible. the fracture could spread if it is hit again and the diamond might cleave...you have to have someone check it out and see if they can fix it and also assess if there is a risk to wear it etc. find out if the girdle is thin or what. what's the clarity, does it have visible inclusions? you might have to have it set into a bezel setting to protect it. take it to an independent appraiser who can assess the stone....someone who does not work for a jeweler or similar.

can you return the stone and get another one? is there a warranty for 30 days or anything? not sure what your options are, just throwing out thoughts. good luck.

Oh, yes! I''d absolutely try to return it if there is the likelihood that the stone was like this when you bought it! And next time, insist on a certificate so you know the inclusions, and call you insurance company the day you bring it home! A 1.5 ct. stone is too valuable to lose or have damaged!

thank you!! I will try, hopefully I can see him this weekend...I will let you all know what happens and thanks for all of your help!

Please do let us know what transpires, and good luck!

Hopefully the jeweler will be able to help you out in this situation...good luck to you!

girdle reflection?
Well, she said between 2 of the prongs, so that doesn''t really sound like it.

GOOD LUCK!!!! I hope it works out. I am concerned for you.

Elle-

Don''t go to a jeweler just yet; first get your stone appraised by an independant (read: not in a jewelry store) appraiser. If the stone checks out ok, get that sucker insured!

alot of jewelrs have liftime policies covering the center diamond if it chips or cracks. Could you tell us where you purchased it?

unfortunatley this jeweler does not have policies like that. i purchased it from a jeweler in a diamond center where there are 100 of them under one roof all competing with each other. i am going to have a jeweler look at it next week, give me his opinion and then try to get my money back, i seriously doubt that will happen. then i will get an appraisal and opinion of the appraiser and possibly have to sue! yuck

I am sorry that this has happened to you but I am not really sure that the jeweler is at fault. Perhaps the crack was there when you purchased it. If so, you did not examine it well enough. It would suck that he/she didn't point it out to you, but that is what microscopes and loupes are for. If you caused the crack by hitting is just right, that is also not the jewler's fault.

that is depressing, i wish we woud've never bought a ring...i would feel much better with the money in an IRA for 30 years! I did look at ith through a loop, but not after it was set.

I don''t know, but maybe an appraiser could tell if the crack (assuming it is one) was caused by impact. If it was, then I guess I would chalk it up to a lesson learned about insuring ASAP. However, it may simply be an inclusion that you never noticed before. That would be the best situation.

I have to say, I'm w/jazmine on this one -

You bought an uncertified diamond from a jeweler w/o a return policy of any kind.
You have no insurance on the ring.

You basically don't have a lot to stand on... there is no way you can prove that the jeweler sold you a diamond w/the hairline crack in it, unless the bill of sale clearly states the diamond's clarity and lists any inclusions. Unless the diamond is set very poorly, and you send it to an independent appraiser who can document this fact, (NOT the jeweler you purchased from, NOT another jeweler) you can't really argue that workmanship caused a crack in the diamond when you bumped your hand.

Accidents happen. It's possible it was a freak accident that hit the diamond at an angle that cause the fracture, and if that's the case, it's not the jewelers fault... you can't sue over that.

Good luck, I hope it all get resolved.

have to sue for what?

i think you are going to have to move on and chalk this up to a lesson learned.
know what you are getting BEFORE you hand over your money. unless you have been around many, many diamonds, don''t buy without a grading report from a reputable lab and if you do, have the stone checked by in INDEPENDENT appraiser first. and of course, insure.

yes, not smart, i guess it may just have to be a lesson learned, one that i can look at on my left hand for the rest of my life!

i just hope that it does not crack in other places over time

which brings us back to seriously considering taking your ring to and indepentant appraiser. they will be able to tell you how safe it is or what needs to be done. Once you get it evaluated get it insured asap. then you don''t have to worry if it gets hit, cracked, chipped, etc. it''s covered and will be replaced. good luck.
