Hello,

where could I visit courses for prospective jewelers, beside the GIA ? Thank you.

Mathias

There are several different areas that could be described as a ‘jeweler’ and they involve rather different skill sets. Jewelry design, gemology and merchandising, for example, are quite different and I don’t think there’s anywhere that you can learn all the skills to do everything related to a jewelry business. That said, here are a few of my favorite places for learning some of the skills that are employed in the jewelry business. Some offer recognized credentials that are helpful in finding employment and others are strictly about learning the material.

Gemology
GIA
Gem-A
International school of gemology
Vancouver Community College
Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences
pricescope.com
local gem and mineral societies

Bench work
Revere Academy
Paris Junior college (Paris TX)
Rhode Island school of design
American school of jewelry
Colorado Jewelry Training Center
GIA

Design
Rhode Island school of design
California Jewelry Institute
Lots of community colleges and art schools about the country

Business skills.
State business colleges
Small business administration
David Geller training
Training offered at conventions

Appraising
American Society of Appraisers
American Gem Society
National Association of Jewelry Appraisers
International Society of Appraisers

I’ll try to put together a more complete list with links because I think it’s an important question and I’m sure to overlook some wonderful trainers but this should get you started.
