This is my first time posting. I have been searching the web for princess cut diamond information. I inquired about the following two stones. Could you please give me your thoughts.

1.54 princess cut diamond - Is this bad because it is not an even 1.50?
E color
VS2 clarity
Grading report is from GIA and GCAL
Depth 71.4%
Table 70%
Crown Height 12.3%
Pavillion 56.8%
Ideal Cut (Is there such thing as a princess diamond to be ideal cut?)
Symmetry- Excellent
Polish - Excellent
Girdle - Slightly thick to thick (Is this a problem??)
Culet - None
Flurescence - None
Measurements - 6.34 X 6.32 X 4.51mm
L/W ratio - 1.00
Asking price - $11,640.00

The other stone

1.52 princess cut diamond
G color
SI1 clarity - not sure if eye clean (have not seen it in person)
Ideal cut
GIA certificate
depth 71.8%
table 68%
crown - unknown
pavillion - unknown
Polish - very good
symmetry - good
girdle - medium to very thick - I guess the very thick part may be a problem
culet - none
fluorescence:none
measurements 6.47 X 6.21 X 4.50 mm
L/W ratio 1.04
Asking price $8,731.00

There is a $3,000.00 price difference. Are differences worth it?

Welcome!

The only way the term Ideal Cut is used for Princess relates to AGS0 Princess. Actually weights such as 1.54 are sometimes preferred rather than the spot on 1.00. 1.5ct etc a some take it to mean that a better cut might have been done rather than trying to hit a ' magic weight' as previously mentioned. This of course isn't always the case but can be sometimes. The girdle at thick could be ok if it isn't taking up a large portion of the girdle with the thick variance - ask the vendor. Very thick can be undesirable, so again ask the vendor if this is of concern.

Are these diamonds from Blue Nile?

The diamonds have potential, it depends on what you want. They don't appear to be top cut as in AGS0 standards but they might be nicely cut diamonds. The next step is to ask for photos and an ASET image in order to evaluate these further, you can't tell much by numbers alone with fancy shapes.

If you are unfamiliar with ASET, this page explains.

Hello Lorelei - yes the first diamond listed is from Blue Nile. I am not familiar with them but have seen their name pop up on different forums and thought I would check it out. Thought maybe I could get a better deal via the internet then at a store with overhead costs etc. The other diamond was from www. since1910.com - they have a store in New York. My husband wants to upgrade my current diamond for out 10 year wedding anniversary 6/27.Not sure if I will find the ring in time at this point .

My current ring is a 1.01 princess, H color, Si1 clarity, bad cut @ a 3B. My dear husband had not clue about cut being so important when buying me my current diamond. Diamond buyers now want to give us half of what he paid for it. It is a white diamond, but does not sparkle. He said he would upgrade the diamond for our 10 year anniversary coming up on 6/27.. but wants me to choose the diamond as he has no time to do the research. I am very over whelmed by all the info. I thought that pricescopes princess cut chart class perimeters would help me find something. I am finding out that the chart is a start.. but not enough and may need to buy one of those scopes. I would not mind buying a scope - but wonder how easy it is to use. As mentioned, I am very new to all of this. Just want to find a sparkler. This is my last chance to find a diamond that sparkles everyday and not just while in the jewelry store - lol. If I mess up in choosing this new diamond I may have to wait another 10 years for another try - LOL.

Thanks for the link sent and please feel free to send on any add''l information you think may help.

If you can get to Long Island definitely make an appointment with Jon at www.goodoldgold.com Jon has top cut Princess he can show you and he is a great guy to boot, you would be in excellent hands with him.

If you prefer to stick to NCY itself, contact Judah at www.exceldiamonds.com You would need an appointment with them, they are on 47th St in Manhattan.

This would probably be the easiest way is to put yourself in the hands of an expert vendor as above if you prefer to buy in person, both vendors also have an online inventory as well as store premises. Both stock AGS0 cut grade Princess and hand selected GIA Princess. The trouble is with ' drop shippers' such as Blue Nile, they don't always have the diamond in hand to advise you and really trying to buy a Princess by a few numbers is buying blind in my opinion. There is just so much info missing that really you can't get a decent idea by just depth and table etc of how a diamond will look.

If you want to buy an ASET scope to view diamonds in person then you could do so, you can purchase from this link below. They are straightforward to use.

http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_zoom_item.asp?Id=23&ShowAdd=Y

But really it would be the easiest method by far as you are in NYC to contact Jon at GOG and see what he can do to help you - tell him what you are looking for and if you don't want to travel to him he can recommend some diamonds and even do a video for you to compare your choices if he has time.

I hope this helps and if you need any more assistance just ask!

What is your budget for the diamond please?

Thank you very much for all the info, I really do appreicate it.

Most welcome!

I second calling GOG and making an appt. Their service is fantastic, friendly, and they really put an emphasis on cut. You can absolutely find something that will sparkle anywhere there!

They would take great care of you.
