So its come down to just committing to the ring purchase. Ive had my eye on a 1.72ct H, SI1, GIA Ex Ex Ex, HCA 3.1 with a custom mount including 1.40cts of side stones. Final price incl tax$14,000

Id like your opinion on how much Im spending. I went a little over intended budget to get the perfect (in my eyes) ring. However I based this not only on my salary (in which the e-ring is slightly above my "2 months" mark) but our financial situations. I own my home, paying the e-ring off with cash, she still lives with her parents, we both have no debt (besides my mortgage), and we''ve both have a nice chunk in savings and retirement for future endeavors. Ive discussed with my friends what Im considering and they both thought I was crazy for spending that. In reality they have no idea about either of our financial situations.

Am I making the right choice? I must admit Im going to have a hard time watching my money grow in a savings account, but I really think she deserves it, and best of all she would never expect it.

THANKS PS''ers

I think it''s totally sweet that you want to make her happy and are willing to go a little over budget. If it doesn''t break your bank, why not? She will be SO thrilled!

She''ll love it! And for such a once in a lifetime gift, I think it''s fine to go over budget if you can afford it. Your friends are probably freaking because they might be over extended or have CC debt.

We''ll need pictures!! GL!!

You have to feel comfortable with what you are spending on this ring. It doesn''t seem as though you totally are, otherwise you wouldn''t be asking, right?

IF you can afford it and not strain yourself financially then why not? This is a once in a lifetime purchase - and like you said, she deserves it and will be thrilled!

Hi rock_solid, except for the HCA score, your stone''s stats & GIA specs are exactly the same as my stone! We also had a custom setting made, but it has 0.36 carats in it. Our final cost came out a little higher than yours, but similar ballpark.

FF''s friends also think he''s crazy for spending so much on a ring. They can''t ever see themselves spending more than 5K. One of his friends recently got engaged and gave his fiance a ruby. After much searching he found one friend who spent $10K because his fiance wouldn''t settle for anything less, but this guy justified it by getting married in court to save money by skipping the wedding. But that is the circle FF is in. The profession that I work in, the men in my profession buy their wives rings that are probably double our budget if not more. We used to have one instructor walk around knocking everyone over with her 3.65 carat ring "because he loves me 365 days of the year." Quite the opposite end of the spectrum. The few girls that I do work with, one''s fiance traded out the initial small engagement ring for a much larger one right before their wedding, and the other girl also had one of those black-eye-for-anyone-in-the-way 3 carat rings. Obviously budgets are a very personal thing but it sounds like you are confident in justifying your purchase.

And I agree with the others, pics of course please!!!

For a 1.72 ct center stone and 1.40 ct side stones, $14,000 seems low. Hopefully your stones are well-cut. You’d probably have to go smaller if you wanted an HCA at 2 or below.

But to answer your question, spend what you are comfortable with and don’t discuss it with everyone. You’ll be setting your gf up for too many “opinions” about her beautiful ering when everyone knows the price tag and thinks it''s a ridiculous amount of money to spend.
