Has anyone tried consigning their setting with jbEG, Pearlman's or a similar vendor? I am thinking of selling the Whiteflash Champagne setting in my avatar, and would rather have someone else sell it than myself. Do you have any advice? I am thinking of starting at 60% of the amount I paid for it, but I realize that settings are hard to sell.

I looked into consigning something and I was told what the consigner would ask for the item, including their fees. Fees are pretty reasonable considering all the work that goes into someone selling something for you, but you could also try on your own.

I will follow this one closely being that I might soon be in this same situation. Someone with less particular/OCD requirements for an item would do better with this setting I think!

I listed mine with Grace (JbEG) and she's awesome.... I sent her the paperwork and she helped me decide the price (less emotionally attached and much more reasonable.. since I really do want to sell it)... Took a ton of really good pictures. and is doing a great job...

Thanks, ladies.

The consignment fee for jBEg is $375, which is reasonable. I was planning on listing at $1100. (I am basing it on the fact that the setting is $1675 on WhiteFlash. I am willing to eat the several hundred I spent on a on a custom heading, and then replacing that heading with another one at Quest). Best case, it would leave me with $645, which is not that much, after the fee.

For that amount, I am considering on keeping it. I like the style, just not in yellow gold. I could rhodium plate it, and put in a blue sapphire, and just wear it on occasion to not wear away the plating. Not being able to wear it much is an issue. However, I do want a blue sapphire one day, and a setting for it would cost me >$645.

Since that's all you'd get, but you'd really like more, I'd seriously consider listing it on DB on your own - which is free. It might not sell but you won't have lost much in your attempts to sell it, some time taking the photos and writing up the listing.

I personally would accept the payment through PayPal, then ship insured with tracking and signature and all that, and only shipping after payment is received and cleared.

It couldn't hurt to try listing on Diamond Bistro first, and then try consigning later if DB doesn't pan out. It seems like a lot to pay to consign a less expensive piece.

The cold hard truth is that settings sell for very little on the secondary market -- think just over scrap value -- unless it is a highly saught name brand, like Ritani or Tacori, or a special piece like an SK mount, maybe a BGD halo. Most sellers don't want to accept this, so settings sit around a long time on DB and on JBEG. Retail value seems to matter little in determining the price people will pay. Instead, there seems to be some sort of absolute amount people will pay for used mounts, and in my opinion, that is in the $300 to $500 range.

There are costs involved in buying a used mount. Usually prongs need to be reworked or redone, then there are setting fees. Buyers factor these into the price they are willing to pay. I have noticed most used mounts at JBEG have been there a very long time because they are wildly over priced by the consigners.

Ame in my opinion you might get $500 for your mount.

Listing it can't hurt... and it doesn't cost anything... :naughty:

I agree that it is not worth consigning a setting. I'd put it on Diamond Bistro and make the starting price about half of what it currently sells for and say you'll accept offers. I have a couple of settings I need to sell and that is what I plan to do eventually.

Thanks everyone. I am on the fence about selling it myself--I wrote out the DB listing, then stopped. Husband says he would rather I buy another stone to put in it and rhodium plate it...did he just give me a blessing for a sapphire? I think so :naughty: I am so indecisive about this.

Ame, let us know how it goes for you if you sell.

If you're on the fence or indecisive at all, just hold off on the DB listing or consigning... and though normally I try my best not to be an enabler, personally I can *totally* see a blue sapphire in your beautiful setting (and depending on the sapphire color I would even consider leaving it two-tone metal). Just sayin'

Sure will!

I am going to just wait for this Flyer thing to be finished so that I can then proceed.

I would sell on DB and not consign. Start at 50% off retail. And make sure to link to it. If you get no nibbles after a week or so, lower it.

It's a lovely setting, so just keep it in mind that you may have to lower the price a couple times.

Thanks gypsy and marymm. Good luck, Ame.
