So I just got back from Tiffany''s hoping to finalize my decision as to what specs I want for my engagment ring. The lady I have been dealing with was not there which is unfortunate because she''s an absolute doll.

Anyway, I talked to another SP and asked her to show me the colors they currently carry in the legacy. I told her I was pretty certain I wanted a G in a 1 1/2 carat. She started saying how I should definitly not go below a F and that the difference between a G and an F is noticeable in the size stone I''m getting blah blah blah. She was very adament about it.

My usual sales person and the person I had talked to before said I should just go with the G (as have many of you). So I thought I was sure I was going for the G but now I''m confused... again. WHat do you guys think. Should I maybe even go up to an E. To be quite honest however, when the sales lady showed me a D next to a G (both 1 carat) I had to really concentrate and move the ring back and forth to see the difference.

Is G a good deal?

Unless you''re very color sensitive, a G will look beautiful. It''s about the best of both worlds with quality and price.

If you really like a G, go with a G...

The only time you''ll truly notice the color is when you have a G next to a D...and even then, as you admitted yourself, the difference is slight unless you''re color sensitive. Consider this, your FF will just be wearing a G--there will be no in your face comparison.

Also, there is a price hike when you jump from G to D...and I''m sure the sales associate you worked with today is working partially on commission...she wanted to "pad" the sale a bit. I would go directly back to the girl you''re comfortable with and make the purchase of your beautiful "G" T&Co diamond!

If you can''t see the difference, as you stated, then why bother?

People tend to have their individual preferences about diamond color. I happen to be on the same side as the sales lady who recommended not going lower than F. This is because I am color sensitive and usually always pick up the difference in color between stones right away.

If you do not, then there is no need to go higher than G. G stones can be GORGEOUS diamonds that are a GREAT value given that they fall outside of the "colorless" range, thus you would not be paying the premium associated with getting a diamond in that range.

If you are GOOD with G, I say GO for it!

.... after all the diamond is for you and not for the sales lady or anyone else who might hold a different opinion.

This diamond selection process can be incredibly confusing, emotional and overwhelming. Sticking to your gut is probably the way to go b/c if you pay too much attention to what everyone else thinks or has to say, you just end up getting more confused. Given what you have shared with us so far, it seems fairly apparent that you know what you like but you are just second guessing yourself ... stop it. Buy the diamond ... we can''t wait to see it!

check out the cut -- as previous posters have mentioned, cut makes a huge difference.

but again, it is all comes down to personal preference...for ex: I believe G VS2 is the best of both worlds, especially with a great cut... it took me a long time to come to that, but that''s the zone that felt good for me...as I wanted size.

No one should tell you want you should or shouldn''t buy... go with the diamond that calls to YOU. Also, look at the stones in all kinds of lighting... what the SP likes and what you like could be two different things...

have you ever considered going to one of the PS vendors for your stone?

I thought the same thing about G, VS2 and it was actually what I had decided on and was completlely satisfied... well at least until tonight. THe sales lady just made it sound like G would be a bad purchase and everyone would know it''s not colorless. I really want a 1.5 and in an F the price is higher to the point where it becomes a different budget bracket. SHe just made me feel bad. I''d ask my boyfriend to decide but I he won''t be able to distinguish a D from a K. SO he''s no help

I''ve considered it but I love the legacy cushion!

I really doubt that you''ll be able to see a difference between a G and an F. For the most part (unless in the case of L and below color diamonds), you really only see color in a diamond from the side, or the body when set in a ring. In the case of the Legacy, you wont see the side of the diamond due to the way its set!

They are graded for color upside down because that is where they really show color

. Besides, your FF wont be wearing the ring next to another one of D color, right?

Sorry to hear that she made you feel bad -- that''s so wrong!! Can she bring in stones for you? So you can look at a few? Seriously, cut really makes a difference, and if you get a great cut G, it will be ICY WHITE. I''m telling you this as someone who wanted nothing below an E, then I found PS, did my research and I''m verrry happy with my G and it even appraised closer to an F anyway!

I would definitely stick with the G, especially when you couldn''t see the difference between the D and the G. I went with an I when I purchased from Tiffanys and it''s definitely the cut that makes the difference as it''s so icy white. I would go back to your normal SP next time you return and don''t feel bad at all after speaking with that new SP. A G is an amazing stone!

Diamond Confused ask yourself these questions: Would it be in her best interest to try and make you BUY a higher colour and most likely a more expensive diamond? Does she have an ulterior motive? Is she going to try and steal the sale from the other SA but convincing you to go with a different product? (This happens a lot in sales with SA''s competing with each other for commissions).

Sales people have budgets and targets that they have to adhere to and sometimes what is best for the customer may not correlate with that, there are exceptions to that rule.

If you can''t see the difference honestly do not hesitate to go with a G some people they may be able to see a difference in an F and a G but it does not make one diamond better looking then the other. There are more important factors to a diamonds beauty then colour (cut mainly :)), And G colour is still really white and icy :)

I am fairly certain anyone that sees that amazing legacy will be going ohhhhhhh thats so purdie :):), go the G and back to your original SA and disregard this other poppie SA.

Let your own eyes be the judge. Why let the sales person influence you in your choice? I would call and ask when your original salesperson will be in since you seemed very pleased with her and you were both going in the same direction.
A G is considered in the colorless category and it should be up to you, not the salesperson, to determine which color suits you. You are going to pay for and wear the ring and you can get a larger stone in a G than in an F. I am sure that a G in that gorgeous legacy setting will be great unless you are very color sensitive, which you do not appear to be since you said you had difficulty telling the difference.
I would definitely try to go back to your original sales person. The one you have now sounds very pushy.

Bleh, I don''t like pushy salespeople like that. I go in thinking I know my stuff, and then they shake my confidence, just so they can make more money! Bleh, I don''t like that at all. You want a G, so get a G! It''s your ring, not the SA''s.

Hi everyone! Thank you all for your words of encourgement. This ring search was turning into a disillusioning experiece but you all gave me a little lift. I''m glad I''m involved in this because if my boyfriend was the one doing all the leg work I think he''d give up and never propose.

Well I just got more info on the ring I wanted. It is a 1.46 G VS1 with a cut rated as exellent. So this will look quite white right?

You''ve seen both, get what you like. Remember that the sales person may see the colour differently than you do and that may be why she''s trying to convince you to move up in colour. It may help to go back and look again with a different sales person or as they would be in real life - on your finger, not next to each other.

I looked for pics of your engagement ring on here and it''s beautiful. It looks icy white. i would have never guessed it was an I.

I checked the rating of the cut and it''s rated Excellent for the G we are looking at.
