Hi all,

please let me know if i should get this one!

in this setting: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_6305?catid=7&div_exp=collProduct&div_coll=expProduct

thanks in advance,

Will likely be a nice stone but you need more information like and idealscope, sarin....to be sure. Nice that it has it already laser inscribed too and only a 3 day old certificate.

As for the setting, you need to be carefull with blue nile because they are not the best about fitting the ring head to the diamond. They often do not look balanced and meant for the actual diamond....

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, blue nile does not provide that service. Is there anything concerning about the stone? Is the price fair?

I suggest you call and hold the diamond just in case you want it. They will hold for 2 days or even up to a week. People reading the forum may snatch it so hold it until you decide. This will give you enough time to get other recs from forum members etc... without worrying if you will lose it... All they ask is for your name. No credit card info is needed.

Welcome!

The diamond certainly has potential. By the proportions it looks good, but Idealscope and other images are very useful to be able to confirm the numbers and BN do not offer such services, however they do have a 30 day return policy should you need it. But it does look promising.

Thank you for the suggestion. :)

Do prices often go down after the holidays?

Hope you got it because it is no longer available :)

Very good advice, Beach, especially with this incorrect information concerning the BN-cut grade:

"This diamond is cut to the finest proportions as determined by its face-up appearance, design, and craftsmanship. It reflects nearly all light as fire and brilliance as determined by the GIA. The GIA certificate lists the cut as Excellent, which is the equivalent of an AGSL or Blue Nile Ideal cut grade."

A GIA-EX is not the equivalent of an AGSL Ideal cut grade.

Live long,

Yes, I put it on hold :)

I just started seriously looking and so I''m wondering if it''s a good idea to wait until the new year to buy?

No, diamond pricing is what it is and can vary according to other factors.

What other factors affect price? Also, is there a time when diamond inventory is higher or lower than others? When does one have "the best" selection?

Blue nile has a nice extended holiday return policy too... Ok. what is your budget and what are you looking for? Now that you have the diamond on hold, people can offer other suggestions too :) Cut and Color are the most important IMO....third being Clarity

Thank you again for your help and patience with me.

I would like at least 1.5 carats, ideal cut (best cut possible), at least G color, eye clean (so VS2 or better) with a budget of $17,000. Also, I like that blue nile has interest free financing for 6 months although I can pay cash (bank wire) if the diamond is worth it.

We have already decided against upgrading, hence the larger budget and at least 1.5 carat weight. Is an H diamond obviously less white than a G?

No, not to my eyes anyway ( GIA or AGS graded) with a great cut. A well cut H will still be distinctly white. If you are unsure, see if you can compare some similar diamonds in person so you can see what you think, check out some diamonds of known cut quality such as AGS0 ( Jareds sell them) of similar size and colour, also Hearts on Fire if there is a dealer near you.

Is there a noticeable difference between a 1.5 carat and 1.7 carat when set?

To me yes, assuming well cut diamonds of the same shape ( rounds).

Depends on the mm diffference and where the weight is being held....

The ring size is a 6. I know this is very personal, but would 1.5 be substantial enough for long term satisfaction? Should I try to push it to 1.7+?

1.5 is substantial on any finger :)

The suggested diamonds certainly look gorgeous but are there any within the price range that are larger and still ideal cut/white?

Could maybe go bigger if you drop to SI1 clarity but that is your call. I am a little OCD so I like the whole VS thing. Others will say SI1 can be eye clean but I do VS always...

Bear in mind that the original diamond from BN is still a well cut diamond and could be worth consideration for purchase if the size and colour are what you want. IMO the size difference is worth serious thought between 1.5 cts and 1.7 as to my eyes the size increase is worth it ( again assuming well cut diamonds which have the right face up size). If you bought it and wanted a professional opinion on the cut quality, then you could take it to an appraiser who has experience in judging cut during the return period to make sure it checks out to your satisfaction.

Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

Thank you beach, I happen to agree with you on the VS2 thing.

If I do decide to go with the blue nile diamond, once I have it in hand, is there a way to get those idealscope, sarin, etc images?

Also, is the cut good enough since there is no heart and arrows, ags 0, a cut above, etc type distinctions for blue nile?

Not necessarily. I have a 1.5, a 1.75, and a 2.06 and I''m seriously considering an upgrade to 3+

Of course I have larger fingers

thank you Loreili,

It looks like I was typing my question are you were already answering it!

What width of band would you suggest for a 1.5-1.7 carat round diamond? I am looking at a solitaire setting.
