Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advice?

I have a beautiful BGD rose gold and platinum Nightingale that I love. Really it is everything that I wanted it to be and more. I received the ring on September 3. Five days into having the ring, I noticed it had a lot of wear on the bottom of the shank. It was really more then I thought it should show for such a short time. I showed it to another jeweler and asked about the wear on the ring. She said that it was normal to have wear. When I mentioned to her that it was only a week old, she asked if I had been laying bricks??
I called in and spoke with Denise about my concern. I also had to have the ring sized down, so I sent the ring back. Once they received the ring and had a look at it I spoke with Brian who then assured me that it was not the quality of the rose gold. They refurbished it and resize it for me. He also suggested for me to pay attention to what I am doing with my hands. I was also think maybe with the resizing from a 5 to a 4.75 that it would make a difference.
I just got the ring back on Thursday and last night I noticed that once again it is showing a lot of wear (only worn 24 hours). The day I was wearing it I wore it to the grocey store, took my kids to school, folded laundry, drove the kids to and from, I took it off to do dishes but nothing to me that should wear the ring so quickly. I also noticed that when I drive the bottom of the shank doesn't really touch the steering wheel, it sort of rests in the fold of my finger.
One other thing, for my 1 year anniversary my husband gave me a ring that I would wear on the same finger. I can't remember if it is 18k or 14k but the shank is a thicker width (link to that ring https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/married-1-year.49477//) To me it showed normal wear and tear. I took it in to have it re-dipped. I picked that ring up the same day that I sent the nightingale back and wore it for a total of 10 days. That ring doesn't show near the wear the nightgale shows after these last two days. So now I am not sure what to do, I really don't think it is anything I am doing. Please advice on how you would approach this. I love my ring and I love the rose gold. Thank you!

One goldsmith remarked to me that rose gold alloy can be very brittle compared to other alloys, particularly when it needs to be repaired or resized. For this reason they were using their custom alloy they called "peach gold" which is well, peachier than pink. Maybe it could have something to do with the excess wear you are seeing? it is just scratches or do you feel it's being worn thin already? It is such a pretty ring, you should be able to wear it with confidence that you aren't hurting it!

Is it the rose gold or the platinum showing wear? Also, is it sitting next to another ring?

The wear that I experienced first was prior to sizing it down. It is scratches not the metal wearing away.

The platinum isn't showing wear nor are the sides of the ring, just the bottom of the shank. I don't wear other rings with it either.

Right now I don't have confidence and it bother's me. I have little ones but really I don't see that I am overly hard with my hands. I don't know what to do..

So is it the platinum ONLY at the bottom of the ring?

If so, I have a platinum ring with a very thick shank and after wearing it ONCE I couldn't believe how much the bottom of the ring looked less "buffed" and very worn. It's only at the bottom and nowhere else. It happened so fast and I was really shocked. Strangely, it's stopped now - it seemed to get to a position where it was happy and it didn't get any worse! I know that sounds odd but it may be that this is how platinum on the underside of rings will react to you. What's more odd is that I'm very very very light with my rings and can wear gems that most wouldn't consider to be suitable for rings. So I don't think it's a case of "how" you're wearing it.

The gallery is platinum which is fine. It is he shank that is rose gold and showing the wear but it only shows it on the bottom (palm side).

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

you know, my engagement ring was originally in white gold and I had the same problem, I hated it. I used to look at it every 5 minutes or so it seemed. I'd get out of the car and look at it, wash my hands and look at it....think about it when I was trying to fall asleep or watch tv. It was weird, I have never had another piece of jewelry do this before.
I finally couldn't stand it anymore and had to have the stones reset into a platinum setting, just for piece of mind. It worked, I check on it every now and then, but it looks normal every time aside from the normal dulling of the platinum.
My jeweler ( not who we bough the ring from originally) was baffled.

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

I am wondering if the color of the gold simply makes it easier to see the scratches relative to white metals?

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

I have the Cartier Trinity ring. I wear it when doing almost everything. I have not noticed undue wear and tear on the rose gold or any of the bands. I would have thought with the rolling ring style that it would be more scratched, but it's not. I wish I could help you. Perhaps different rose golds are made with different alloys.

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

It's probably a softer alloy maybe?

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

That is what I need to know, whether or not it is a usual thing for rose gold. If it is then it might not be the metal for me, if it isn't then I wouldn't know what to do. I really don't see that I am doing much to cause this. Now obviously with a teenager, two little ones, and a house to run I use my hands but I even have proof with the other ring that the wear on this is much different. I love the look of the rose gold ( it adds such a unique feel) a lot but it bother's me how it shows this much wear. :(( Urrgghh.. I just don't know? I know there are a few people on here who have rose gold rings from BGD hopefully they will be able to chime in on their rings..
Thanks everyone..

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

Well in general, I believe rose gold is softer than white or yellow. So you may just want to switch to white gold, if you want to avoid future problems.

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

I am sorry to hear of your concerns - I know Brian has already addressed it with you in part, but to me it sounds like an issue with the quality of the alloy / mix of metals used.

I would ask again what their exact alloy entails, and than try to gain some insight from an appraiser or a trusted jeweller about that information.
My other thoughts are, could it be a porosity issue in that section of the ring?

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

Hi Mommy2nk: Your ring is beautiful and I have been pondering doing a rose gold setting from BG. I love rose gold, and I read some articles about it being softer than white gold so I have been aprehensive and haven't made up my mind on what I wanted to do. I saw your ring when you first got it and I was like "Yes! I want to order mine in rose gold.

Now, I have concerns about it if you're having so many problems with the scratching.

What are you doing to do have you decided? ;))

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

Maybe we should start a thread calling for pictures of rose gold settings. My 18K rose gold upgrade ring seems to be showing normal wear, but "normal" is relative, so now I'm not so sure! I wear a yellow gold band that was my grandmother's, and she wore it every day since the 1930s, and now that I compare the two the rose gold does seem to show more wear. However, the yellow gold is probably 14K, not 18K.

I'll take photos tonight and post them, if that would be helpful.

Until this thread, I never even noticed the wear on the palm-side of my ring!

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

That's actually a great idea, perhaps if others have rose gold they can comment if they are having the same wearing issue.

Same. I was checking out my Trinity after reading this thread. It looks a touch duller than when I first got it, but no real scratches. Maybe different mixes have different durabilities.

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

Checked mine, it's comparatively duller at the bottom but not something I would notice unless looking very closely

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

I think the copper alloy often used for pink gold does make it softer and more susceptible to showing wear; I wore a pink gold ring for about a week and there was definitely a noticeable "not new-ness" on the bottom, but I wouldn't say it was particularly ragged looking. Like all metal colors and alloys have their quirks, I think this may just be a characteristic of 18K pink.

Good luck finding a solution that works for you!

Re: Concerns with my rose gold Nightingale, please need advi

My rose gold ring also showed ton of wear & tear after the first couple hours of wear..... (when compared to my WG ring)
but after a few weeks...they all seem to disappear.. might be something with the polish.

I hope yours will be the same as mine!
