COLOURS 2 Choose?

I''ve been researching for the past couple months for that perfect diamond for my future bride. Originally, I wanted a D-F coloured diamond however, I have since changed my mind. What I ask you is: I would like to purchase an Hearts and Arrows Diamond:

.82 carats
ideal cut H and A
vs2
Measurements: 6.06 - 6.08 x 3.71
Depth: 61.1
Table: 54
Girdle: THIN
Culet: NONE
Polish: EXCELLENT
Symmetry: EXCELLENT

These seem like great specs but its a J!

The setting would be a white gold tiffany''s 6 prong setting.

Will the diamond look yellow with a white gold setting, since its a J?

I would like to get a diamond with the as much brilliance and light reflection as possible and I would achieve it with an H&A however, I would lose in the colour category if I choose a J. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Here's a pic of my 1.25 carat, J color diamond, set in platinum. It is not yellow at all. I have also seen a 0.85 carat, J color, ACA from White Flash that was fabulous against white metal as well.

The Ideal cut will make the diamond face-up much whiter than the actual color grade. Also the diamond will be complimented by your gal's skin tone making it appear much brighter as well.

J can offer great value allowing you to maximize your budget/purchase. A lot depends on your own personal color sensitivity and the hue/tint of the rough that the diamond was cut from.

I would not judge diamond color from pictures - no matter how good. How can we know what actually shows on YOUR screen? The subtle shades that make colorless diamonds' color grades are definitely less prominent than the color variance between computer monitors. Diamonds are graded under controlled lighting conditions... and they cannot be well communicated outside the respective grading environemtn (actually, good for you, once set, virtually no one can tell color grades - so grading and appraisals of set diamonds come with estimated split grades). No way pictures can work well to show diamond color!

It would be much easier and more reliable for you to go into a store and see any GIA graded J color - if it works for you all for the better. The worst the stone is cut (the less sparkle) the more color shows - so your H&A can only get better.

Also, the smaller the stone the less color it will show - I would definitely not worry about J around 1 carat... But that's just me, and I am not very convinced diamond color grades are good for much

If you do choose to go fact-finding, you may wnat to look for I grades too. There usually is some overlap between prices for neighbouring grades among sellers, although finding a stone around .9 cts is likely to take some time.

I think the best advice anyone can give you is to go to a reputable store and look at them yourself. Color is of personal preference. I originally only wanted F,G or better. I looked stones face up and face down and decided H was more than OK. Now I think I would go as low as I; and J in earrings.




But, you need to decide yourself




edited to add: Have you seen the stone you are asking about? You mention trading off H&A cut for color. Again, I think the best thing is to go and look at the H&A J and maybe a premium cut in a G,H of the same price and decide for yourself. BTW where are you located? By the spelling of colo(u)r, I'm guessing Canada or UK?

And I'm not sure that you want to evaluate a stone by it's side view, unless you're strictly trying to gauge it's relative size.

My advice is to look for a J color that has blue flourescence, as this can help the stone look very white in most lighting situations.

Valeria is right in that it is hard to go by pictures because it really does depend on your screen and everyone's is set differently! Your best bet would be to look at diamonds of J color and ideal cuts in person to really see how much you see. Some people are very color sensitive and can see color right away, and others can't see any no matter how long they stare!!

Cut is very important if you are looking for a colorless looking stone in a lower color graded stone. But I personally have to say that I myself own an ideal cut RB set in white gold, and it's a J. I absolutely love it, and had I not actually known the color grade, I would never have guessed that it was! It really all depends on your eyes. Even though it may not mean too much because everyone's PC screens are different, here's my ring (J center in a white setting):

Good luck with your decision! Ultimately it's up to you whether you notice the color or not, but they are beautiful stones!

How hard is it to find matching J color stones with blue fluorescence, say for studs? I've looked at the listings and it doesn't appear to be that easy.

Hi Noobie,

For round stones, it is not that difficult depending on timeframe allowed.

If I needed them within three days it may be impossible.

If I have sufficient time to source and shop for the perfect pair, then it is relatively simple.

For fancies it may be exponentially more difficult.

I just went to a store and they showed be the difference b/n a G and and I and at the side profile there was a difference, however, not a very big deal! from the top both diamonds look quite beautiful and were very hard to see colour differences b/n the two. Anyhow, I have some quotes and prices of some diamonds and wanted to know your opinion on whic is a better deal. Thanks for your help.

First of all, I would eliminate all the stones from gem scan. How can they have a split grade H/I color for lose stones? That's a bunch of bull. go with AGS or GIA cert.
