I have been told that if you have a lower colour stone that once it is set, it can look up to 3 grades better? Is this true? I am looking at a J loose stone - does that mean it could look like a G or an H once set or this just a sales pitch?
I have heard that it looks great alone but when put next to an G or H and up it will look somewhat yellow.... I had and I-J stone once and it was great alone but next to an H it was a little yellow. Hope that helps.
i'm not sure that it'll look 3 grades better..but it is harder to tell once the stone is set. if the diamond is cut well, that is what makes the stone face up whiter..
I think what they mean is that, face up, it looks like the color of the other stones when their table is down. In other words, just as your stone will not show as much color when face up, neither will the other stones. Just something to keep in mind!
Thanks, David. There is no fluorescence. It is an "Ideal" cut - here are the stats -
3.01 VS2 J EGL
depth 69.2% table 67%
girdle is medium and polished
no culet
very good polish and very good symmetry
crown height is 9%
pavilion depth is 56%
8.23 x 7.88 x 5.45
diascript in the girdle
Vendor tells me that it is a fantastic stone a 9/10. He agrees with EGL that it is in fact a VS2 and he agrees with the colour (although may be a weak J). I will be setting it in yellow gold with VS1-2 I baguettes and possibly VVS2 - VS1 I round brilliants. Everything sounds great (especially the price of $13,000) but I hesitate with the J. I don't know. I can't see it without buying it! What to do, what to do!!
