Colour Change Luc Yen Spinel

I’m debating whether to post pictures today or tomorrow. I received this 1.36 ct colour change spinel from Brad of the GemTrader yesterday and am glad to announce that it is a keeper. It measures 7.6 x 5.5 mm so faces up well enough for a ring stone. This Luc Yen Vietnamese spinel has so many beautiful personalities that range from a purplish pink indoors to a purplish blue colour outdoors. For something that is light in tone, it is surprisingly well saturated. It also looks much prettier than Brad's pictures. I will preface with the vendor’s pictures.

Very pretty stone and if it looks even better than those photos - wow!

Other than mahenges and the really good reds I'm not a huge spinel fan... but I would kick this one out of my gem case!

This was taken indoors but with some natural light through a window a few feet away, hence the background appears dark. As you can see, it is a very rich purple with wonderful blue flashes.


I’m not good with fluorescent lighting but I tried. Here it is showing a lavender colour with some blue flashes.


Here comes the requisite bathroom (incandescent) picture showing a full shift to pink. It’s not the best picture but the best I can do to capture the pink colour.

Wow, I'm not usually a color-change lover, because typically one of the colors is usually kinda meh - but in your spinel, BOTH colors are equally attractive! A keeper indeed - yum!

Thank you to everyone who commented on the stone and pictures. I didn’t expect the spinel to be much prettier in person but I suppose the luster, dispersion and liveliness is difficult to capture on camera. I rarely like pastel stones but it is clearly an exception. As I was on my way home last week, I noticed it became pinker when the sun was setting. I supposed it is due to the different wavelength so I will try to take a late afternoon picture later today. This stone will definitely be set but I’m not sure when as I’ve so many other beauties yet to set. It might be a halo to amp up the size and enclosed to deepen the tone a little.

I am back to upload the last 2 pictures as promised yesterday. I’m sure many are tired of my pictures but I plan to keep my word. I wish the picture quality is better but it’s the best I can do with my trusty old point and shoot.

This first picture shows a combo of blue, lavender and pink all at the same time.


This next picture shows a stronger pink component which I only see outdoors early and late in the day. I think this could be due to the different wavelength of sunlight at different times of the day that causes this phenomena.
