Since I sent all my loose gems away to be set, I'm obviously pondering my next project. If one were to make a 3 stone ring, what would be good proportions? For instance, if the center stone was 6 mm, would 4 mm sidestones be too big?
It depends on the look you are trying to achieve. If you want the center stone to be the star, then smaller sidestones are best suited. If you want more bling, then larger sidestones will give it a big 3 stone look. The combination of colours will also play a part in the proportions. I think the combo of 4/6/4 mm is a good middle ground, depending on the colours. A helpful "tool" is to draw circles (I presume these are round cuts) on a piece of paper.
You also have to consider color too. If you want the center stone to be the star, the side stones shouldn't be a color that is too distracting from the middle. For example, in Cellentani's three stones above, if the center were a muddy olive green, and the side stones were a hot pink like the center stone, well, that might take away from the center stone, even though the proportions are nice.
ETA: I see Chrono mentioned the consideration of color already, sorry!
