Planning on putting a diamond in a white gold ring what is the lowest grade of color I should go with (h,i, etc.) so that you don''t notice the yellow????

Not too many can tell you that, I am afraid. Almost everyone here would agree G is surely enough. Quite a few buys with Pricescope asistance went for H and (even larger diamonds, of 3 cts or so which would show more of the color). There are a few Is and Js and the occasional K around.

This is just a summary of what I've seen being posted during less than half a year on PS. The genral advice is to have a look at a few stones with good cut (say HOFs of Tiffany's, wherever you may find a diverse invetory available) and decide.

There are a few good older threads on this issue... such as THIS may help too...

In a 1 carat round most dealers will tell you a diamond "H" or better looks pretty colorless. "I" passes for pretty well for some folks, too.

In smaller diamonds a little darker yet might work out as they generally show less color.

In larger diamonds, over 2ct, H may begin to seem a little off color. It depends on your eyes and the lighting.

I have many clients that own and enjoy L, M, N color diamonds. They can look excellent in the right piece, but none of them see these colors as "white".

hi reebs,
i would avoid lower than h.
also, be careful if you're going for a fancy shape such as pear or marquise, oval or heart and even princess; they tend to 'pull down' the color in face-up position especially at the narower areas or points. in this case i would recommend higher than g.
good luck, robbe

I have a I (GIA) 1.6 ct stone set in a white gold setting. I can't really tell it's got some yellow in it but your eyes could be more sensitive. I posted some pics of my stone in a previous thread but pics aren't really good judgements of color because of the way lighting, etc plays into the pic.

There have been times, one in particular, where it was almost sunset and the sun was entering the side of my stone and it really looked yellow. I don't know what that was about and it hasn't happened since.

I'm looking at my stone right now with a black (my wool jacket) and white background. I don't see any yellow. go to a jewelry store or check out pics in the "show me the ring forum". Jonathan at GOG has some good close ups pics of stones in platinum/white gold settings. good luck.

I just got a 1.26 carat, J, ACA from White Flash set in platinum and it's GREAT!!! WHITE, WHITE, WHITE!!

Having sold and mounted an AGS 0, 1.30 ct G VS2 (solid G color) in white gold, I was surprised to hear that the customer could see color in the diamond. I have sold and set many I color stones in white gold without the customer perceiving any color. Color is a matter of personal perception. You may want to get a feel on how color sensitive you may be by looking at several color grades side by side.
