Color Question

I have a question, was wondering if I can get some input please!! I have 2 natural diamonds. One is 3.32 carat, the other 2.05. I will attach pics, the bigger stone is in the yellow gold.

I had read on here that EGL is not that reputable, at times? I've had both diamonds for 15 yrs. Smaller one is GIA cert and F color. Larger one is EGL intl and J color. I have never ever had them checked out, since they were bought from family friends so close, they are almost like family. I wonder if larger stone is even a J? Or maybe a K or L.. it looks yellowish.

Should I get it/them looked at? I don't doubt they are real and nicely cut etc.. but wondering if it is a true J, since I read here once EGL can be tricky.

Hi there, it does depend if it was EGL USA or EGL international. My personal experience is my “EGL International “graded diamond was 2 grades lower in color and clarity versus GIA.
I purchased the diamond through what I thought was a reputable diamond broker. However, I was never able to pull up the certificate number on the EGL website. I wish I knew about Pricescope back then! The positive outcome was the cut. The angles and dimensions were off on the EGL certificate. It rates 1.7 on the HCA.

I'd say at least K if not really L, M, or N on the GIA color scale.

If you are really concerned, have it unmounted and send it to GIA. It is clearly warmer than your GIA F, but it is also set in yellow gold so that may impact the look of the color. Even a GIA J will look warmer than your F so don't expect that not to be the case. And GIA J is a fairly large color range. I'm just not sure why you are asking the question. Are you trying to update your insurance? If so, then maybe take it to a reputable appraiser, or do the GIA grading and then get the appraisal.

Thank you!! No not for insurance. I guess I have had it for 15 plus years, and just never took it anywhere but kind of wondered about the color. And then I saw on here and somewhere else that EGL certificates may not always be the best. True about the gold setting, can be adding to the warmth. I just thought of someone I may be able to take it to, to have it looked at.

I wouldn’t waste your time or money having your stone unmounted, sent to GIA, graded, sent back, and then remounted.

Good to know, thanks!! The smaller one is cut well from what GIA report says, but I had a feeling the bigger might not be *as* nice.. but now I guess worse than I ever thought

Did u know the bigger one does not even have a Cut grade (ex Ideal, Good) on the EGL? Oh my gosh it sounds so funny now.. How can there be no cut grade? I won't take it anywhere lol, you're right

Unfortunately this stone isn't well cut. And also EGL isn't very reputable w color so I suspect it's much lower than a J in terms of GIA. Likely more like an M

Ok thanks, so good to know.. The person who sold it didn't lie and say it was amazing, at the time. But I didn't know how bad it was until now lol. I just saw pictures online and bought it! Crazy to think it can be an M or N

A metal change on the setting (you could just have the setting rhodium dipped) could make a big difference.

Your diamond is a very good carat weight at 3.32, have you considered having it recut? Cut is the most important factor above color and clarity. Especially in a round brilliant shape, it could camouflage some of the tint. @Stargazer’s diamond is a perfect and beautiful example.
Sending my diamond to GIA cost around $180 and was worth it to me to have an accurate grading. It’s much easier to resell a GIA-graded diamond if I ever choose to in the future. I have a blue sapphire that I sent to GIA, now considering a recut which makes the grading null and void. So, if you are considering a recut, please do that first before sending to GIA

No never considered a re-cut! But I've heard of people doing that. I would probably just leave it as is, and change the setting. I'll see also what my husband thinks about the GIA certifying, totoally seems worth it for $180. To get an accurate grading, just to have for yourself or future re-sale.

Settings often become loose over time, prongs lift, etc, and its a good idea to have them inspected every year, or at least every few years. I personally have three girlfriends IRL who have had their diamonds fall out of their rings and been lost forever. Its easily avoided. Plus, you can ask the jeweler for their opinion on the color. Yes, it won't be as accurate as GIA grading a lose stone, but it can give you more info on what you have.

I have literally not taken them anywhere, to anyone, in 15 plus years. Never had them looked at. You bring up good points, for sure. That would be devastating, to lose a stone like that. Thanks @RunningwithScissors !!

Oh my goodness, I just checked both rings. F color one is ok, the J diamond is turning and moving in its setting!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wear this anymore like this. Wow am I glad I came on here about the color, I think i avoided a big disaster.
