Hey guys... I''m no professional in the business, but I''m at a loss with something that happened to my wife and I, and thought someone here may know.

I bought a diamond from a guy on craigslist with what was most likely a fake appraisal report. When I got it, it was nearly perfect... F, VS1. You could see one small black dot right in the center, but that was it. Within 3 months the stone had turned to a dark bluish gray color and has multiple ugly brown lines running through it. My jeweler basically said it is about worthless. I later found out it had been clarity enhanced. When I bought it, my jeweler looped it and it was as described above. Over time, it just got uglier and uglier. My wife now wears a CZ because the diamond is so ugly.

Any idea what happened? The ring was cleaned a few times in the jewelry cleaner that our jeweler gave us. My wife works in a cardiac cath lab at a hospital where she''s around a lot of very low level radiation. When I called the man I bought it from, he immediately disconnected his phone and cannot be found. The police have been useless. My jeweler has no idea what happened to it. The smaller diamonds down the side of the ring are unchanged and still beautiful.

clarity enhance means just that... its fractured filled diamond and when you use an ultrasonic cleaner, its quite detrimental to the filled cavities, but the expert will chime in and go more in depth for you, I just wanted to say I''m sooo sorry about your situation. I hate sellers that are scumbags and take advantage of people, I hope they get their Karma and hope you find a new diamond soon. This is a nice reminder when dealing with Craigslist of what could possibly happen. My heart goes out to you and your wife.

Hi Bayleaf

I am so sorry this happened....It is possible something has caused the filling to leak out assuming this diamond was fracture filled, ammonia based cleaners can do it or some jewellery maintenance procedures. It might be possible to have the filling redone, you could contact-

www.yehuda.com to see if they can help you but the first thing I would do is to get an independant appraisal to find out what you have exactly and what might be able to be done.

You mention that the stone was graded VS1.
I''ve yet to see a VS1 with a noticeable black dot in the middle of the stone, although I own a GIA-cert VS2 that can have a small cluster of cyrstals located by a sharp eye at six inches in the ideal lighting.
I''d expect the kind of inclusion that you describe to be the kind of inclusion in a low-SI1 or a typical SI2.
