Once again asking for advise form all you patient people. I am looking to upgrade my e ring in the nest month or so. My budget is $6000. for the stone alone. I would like to get the biggest one I can. I also don't want to be able to see inclusions. I am aiming for a stone that is ideal cut but still on the fence about color (either I or J) and clarity. I thought I would go SI1 but I am seeing recommendations for some SI2. Is SI2 is good idea?

Every stone is different. There are eyeclean SI2s out there, but I'd want to see it in person (or have someone else look at it) before purchase.

If you are concerned about not seeing inclusions, I would try to find the most eyeclean SI1 possible. Same with color, if you don't mind a little tint in your stone, go with J color, but if that would bother you, go with I color.

I think it really depends on the shape you are going for. I have seen very clean SI2 before or some with tiny inclusions that I can only see from about 3 inches away. I think with RB's you can get away with it. I believe Luvdoll has an RB that is SI2 and very eye clean. It seems you really want size so going down in clarity is a good way to max your budget out. Just be careful that the inclusions either don't bother you or are masked very well. If you do find something I would make sure I see it before you buy it.

Goodluck!

Thanks for the info. I am pretty sure I will go with either BG or James Allen. I am hoping they will be able to tell me if a stone is eye clean or not, just did not know if I should waste my time looking at stones that are SI2. I also know I will ask for help here when the time comes to actually pick my stone

Yes I am looking at RB's

here's a K...it's an si2 but I would ask if it's eye clean. The nice thing about this one is that I can see the inclusion, but it's totally progable. I would confirm this with the gemologist, but PUT THIS OR ANYTHING ELSE ON HOLD!!! It scored a 1.6 on the hca!! But it looks like this is going to be the biggest one you can get, unless you go down in clarity and cut.

Oh those look nice. Not sure I want to go to a K though. Hopefully the J will not be too yellow for me

I think it will be difficult to find a SI2 diamond with a very recent report that is SI2 and also eyeclean. An older report, like pre-2006 or 2007, perhaps. PS buyers used to show bit eyeclean SI2 diamonds all the time back in 2002-2005. But there has been grade creep the past couple years in order to maximize profits. So if it's eyeclean in the table, I think it's more likely to get a SI1 grade than SI2. If the inclusion is in the table of an SI2, I would bet that inclusion can seen by the naked eye, without a loupe, at close inspection. I found that to be true for diamonds above 1.25ct even three years ago.

O.K i will keep that in mind. As I said it will be another week or 2 before I buy it. I have been looking and I would rather have a smaller diamond that is eye clean. I am hoping the James Allen or BG can help me in this area since I will be buying sight unseen.

I have an SI2, graded by AGS, and it's not totally eye-clean. The inclusion is a tiny garnet-color crystal and it's in the table area over top of the culet. I wore that ring 2 days before I ever spotted that inclusion. Most of the time, it's not visible. But in the right lighting, at the right angle, it practically jumps out. I can't get a picture of it because it's so small. But honestly, what it looks like, when it is visible, makes you think it's just the tiniest little spatter of dark nail polish. The diamond is so well-cut that I even study it, and I still think (after 3 years) that it looks like something "on" the diamond, not an inclusion in it. lol

So, this is all related to an individual's tolerance of imperfection or "wonk." :twirl:

No the K stone had a carbon inclusion at 7:00 position. Do not go less than J even better if you can. Each stone is so different you must look at a bunch of stones to be sure that the inclusions can be masked by the setting. Remembering that cut is the most important C.....

Also you might want to consider this roundish cushion if this person doesn't get it. They took a new picture of it and it is very lovely for the price $6,500 and faces up like a 2c cushion:

You can see the ASET here and the comments from the gemologist that it is an high K color and a great performing stone;

Just as an FYI, I have an eye clean SI2, you can see more close up pictures if my ring in my thread if you'd like

Mico..........can I ask if you bought it on line. That is my one concern. I will be buying on line so I will not be able to see it untill I buy it. I know there is a 30 return but I don't want to be returning rings. I will have to rely on someone at James Allen or Bg to tell me if it is eye clean or not. By the way your ring is to die for!

If I'm not mistaken she got her stone or possibly whole ring at IDJ. Yuki there will help you! I've worked with him as well and he's just such a dear! Give him your budget and tell him what your priorities are and he'll search for you. He'll also send you pictures and videos.

I searched online, found some stones I liked, called IDJ after someone recommended them and Yekutiel found me the stone I eventually bought. There was one other stone I wanted and was torn between the one he found me and the one I found, so I actually drove in to see them in person. I went with the one he found me ;)

Bought my Vatche U-113 through him too

P.s. thank you!!!

Well I will have to completely rely on whom ever I go with. I am in California.

I think the best thing is that with whomever you decide to go with, you define what "eyeclean" means to you. To some people it's 12 inches, others 6... Me? Not being able to see it when first scrutinizing the diamond. He didn't send me a video, I may not have made the trip if he had. The initial one I found had a booger I wouldn't have been happy with but was 12" 'eyeclean'

Will all venders send you a video? Is it common to ask for one?

I think many pricescope vendors are used to being asked, but not many do. The ones that do that I am sure of are good old gold, IDJ, jewels by Erica grace, old world diamonds... The others I'm not sure of, so I won't mention

Well I guess I have to rely on an ideal scope, HCA and all the wonderful people on Pricescope.

;) I think I have initially photos of the two diamonds I was looking at, and H vs an I on my initial search posts, you can definitely see the inclusion on the idealscope with the H stone. Might be good to look at when looking at yours.

I would link you, but I'm on my phone :)

That's fine. I can't thank you enough for all your help. When I first started this my hubby wanted to go to a B&M I have convinced him to let me buy on line with the help of my Pricescope friends. I am very excited and know I will get the biggest most beautiful stone I can afford.

Decide what "eyeclean" means to you (totally clean from 5" face-up? from 12" face-up? from the sides as well?) and ask your rep if the stones meet your requirements. Different vendors have different definitions of the term "eyeclean".

The ONLY way to know for sure whether a stone will be acceptably clean to you is to have it shipped out to look at in-person before you have it set - even using your definition your rep has different vision, and "almost totally clean" may well mean different things to different people, if not totally clean...

So you would have it shipped out before it is set then ship it back tow have it set if it meets your requirements?

Yes. It might run you a couple hundred? For an SI I'd always recommend it.

I thought shipping was free
