Hey all. DH and I are not avid coffee drinkers, but occasionally we like to enjoy a cup. We have been considering getting a single serve machine, like the Keurig or Tassimo. Anyone have any advice? Which ones are worth it, which ones stink....

I know some people love them, but I really like my coffee HOT and it just never is from any of the ones I've tried. I haven't been overly impressed with them.

I've tried Philips Senseo, Bosch Tassimo, Krups Dolce Gusta and another one I can't remember the name of. I've tried them all at work, a lot of people have them in their offices. I don't think anyone bothers with them much after the initial enthusiasm wears off.

I find they make not terribly hot, somewhat indifferent coffee. However, if you're using it at home, may I heartily recommend la Pavoni? They take a bit of getting used to (lever pull) but once you get it right, I think it's exceptionally good coffee with proper, thick crema. You can pull a single shot at a time.

Can you try one? Some stores here have them set up for a demo. If you like what they make, then ignore me. ;))

Thanks for the advice Jennifer!

I've got the Keurig and I love it. My coffee always comes out piping hot. Also, instead of using a regular mug I place a travel mug instead to keep my coffee hot.

You can use your own coffee or you can buy the K-cups. We do both. I love the Green Mountain or Gloria Jean's hazelnut decaf and my DH loves the Timothy's.

We love our Keurig! DH likes his coffee hot and that's the way he gets it! I'm in it for the hot chocolate ;))

We've had a Tassimo for a couple of years now and really enjoy the variety of pods available.

I have a latte every evening and DH drinks decaf. Both are very good and the coffee is very hot. This machine will make green tea as well as hot chocolate - no complaints about either so far. :appl: :appl: :wavey:

Yay, i'm getting excited about this! It's nice because there is a lot of variety as far as what you can make with it, and DH and I can have whatever we want and not have to worry about wasting what we don't drink.

Jura Capresso -- very expensive, but possibly worth it. I got to enjoy one when I was a nanny in NYC. It makes reeeediculously good, hot delish coffee and lattes -- pretty much any drink you want -- with the push of a button. There are a variety of models from about $800-$5k...definitely something on our future luxury item list!

Ha. See? The good ones aren't sold where I live. Typical. Same with the jewellery steamer I wanted. :((

Lord, for that kind of money i'd be buying sparklies!!! :o

I have a Keurig and I LOVE it! It's so simple.. The best part is that you rarely have to clean it! Also, I can adjust the temperature on mine, so I've never had a problem with the coffee being the wrong temperature.

Post again if you get one so we can recommend yummy flavors! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Awesome! My dad is going to get it for us for Christmas, so we will definitely have one soon. Are there good decaf flavors? I don't drink regular coffee...

Keurig! Works like a dream. Plus I love that I can make hot chocolate and tea in it. Donut house coffee is AWESOME (especially the cinnamon and chocolate glazed donut flavors).

This is what we used before we started drinking a lot more coffee. Cuisinart Two To Go

You have the option of making one or two cups directly into a travel mug that comes with it. The cups are great. We found ours on clearance at Kohls for $10! You can't even get two travel mugs for that price! I've seen them at TJ Max/Marshals for about $20.

I've had a Tassimo for about 2 years. No complaints. I''d recommend it.

I like Timothy's Cinnamon pastry better than the donut house ones. I accidentally ordered the Donut House last time and they're good, but I think the Timothy ones have more flavor??

Decaf.. mm.. I really like the "Newmans Own" Special Decaf.. or I'd go with one of the Green Mountain blends. Emeril's Decaf isn't too bad either.. the hotel I stayed in a few months ago had it.. yumm.. I'm more of a regular coffee person, so hopefully some others can chime in.

I'm happy you decided to go with Keurig!! :wavey:

DH has the Keurig and loves it.

My mom has been using the Flavia for 4 or 5 years now and it has worked pretty well, but I think the other brands have a lot more flavors and options. So in case you were considering the Flavia, I would look elsewhere. :))

I drank a ton of tea off my office's Keurig machine when I was a summer associate!

Count me in as another huge Keurig fan, I agree with AN I love their hot chocolate and chocolate glazed donut coffee, I also love their dark roast hazelnut, pumpkin spice and French toast.

We have a Keurig at work and it's fine. If you get one, stay away from the Green Mountain "Dark Magic" k-cups, they're bitter and awful. Keurig also sells a gizmo called the "My K-Cup" which lets you use your own coffee in a reusable filter. Of course, they designed the office versions of the machines so you can't use the reusable thing in them...so I usually use my Aeropress: http://www.surlatable.com/product/aeropress+espresso+maker.do?keyword=Aeropress&sortby=ourPicks. It combines some of the best aspects of French press (full immersion of the grounds) with filter coffee (easy clean-up, less oily). However, I'm coffee drinker and have a grinder, so I don't have to worry about the coffee getting stale before I use it. The nice thing about k-cups is that they are sealed so you don't end up drinking stale coffee (yuck) but they do get expensive if you drink much coffee.
