Does the "cup" enhance the color and/or hide the window/color zoning in gem? Can't image cleaning the pavilion with these! Thanks all.

The cup enhances colour and closes any windows. The more enclosed, the more likely crud will be trapped and unable to be removed.

I've been thinking if the gem is set like this, mostly there is something not so great about it.

Possibly, but there’s also budget considerations. Sometimes we get what we can and play up what’s possible.

I have a couple of fairly windowed stones I bought early on that I would want to set in this way to hide the window. In the case of that emerald (and also with jade), it’s probably sliced very thin for translucency and then the foiled back reflects light, making it look expensively glowy. Another stone that is frequently set this way would be opal, especially black opal.
