I think DH is going to get me an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner for Christmas. I''m really excited about it! What, if any, effect will it have on the ring''s patina? The ring is 1920-1930s and has turned a very dull grey colour, almost a gun metal grey.

I don''t think it''ll do anything to it. An ultrasonic is just using sound waves to shake loose dirt and grime, so it shouldn''t do anything to the metal itself. Make sure not to use it on soft gemstones though!

It will not do anything to the patina..... However, dirt can make the ring look darker so after cleaning it will look a little lighter (cleaner)

Thanks! I''m really excited. I hope I''m not mistaken about getting it, I''d feel a bit stupid, but I could be wrong because we''re headed to the US and the voltage isn''t the same.

Neat, what gemstones are considered soft? I don''t think I have any, just a couple of diamond things, rubies, and sapphires. I''m taken with garnets and amethysts lately.

soft gem stones are stones like Agate, Garnet, Iolite, Jadeite, Peridot, Tanzanite, Tourmaline, Amethyst, Citrine, and all other Quartz. Also no pearls and opals. Hope this helps.

And emeralds. Definitely not to be use in Ultrasonic.

How long are you planning on staying in the US? US is 120V. A voltage converter should be enough as a ultrasonic do not draw as much current as a steamer, but check the current ratings on your voltage converter if you are going that way. If staying for longer periods, might as well buy one in the US?

We''ve dicussed UK ones since that''s where we live. I''m spending Christmas in the US so I think we''re exchanging our gifts to each other on New Years. I''m not sure of good UK ones, but I figure he''s good with electronics so if he''s serious about finding one, he''ll find it. Got any UK brand recommendations?
