Hey all,

I'm looking at a 2.2 carat stone with a cloud pretty much in the center of the table. Remember reading a past post by GarryH (cant find the thread for the life of me)....talking some of the different problems that can arise from this issue....and that table inclusions were best avoided.

This is has become enough of an issue to me that I'm making arrangements to travel to Houston to see this stone (and perhaps a few others =) ) in person. Would love to hear some comments from everyone involving their general experiences with stones with this type of inclusion...and perhaps what i should look for or expect from it.

Thanks everyone....and thanks to stone-cold for providing me with the pdf link.

Do you have a faceup photo? Linky?

cloud in the middle of the table is not so much an issue as how deep it is into the pavilion, and how dense & spready it is. As you get deeper into middle of the stone toward the culet the majority of light paths travel through this region - so any 'problems' will affect that much more output light - very few rays travel through a spot near the girdle, for example, so the inclusion has much less effect there. This is different from visibility of the inclusion - the girdle inclusion may well be more visible. AGS proportions grading/tracing software does not consider inclusions or diamond colour as input when determining cut grade

in this case I personally would not worry because the stone has been vetted by a vendor I would trust, and they have a generous return policy in any case.

This is the clarity plot of my diamond-note the cloud. I personally cannot see ANY visual impact from the cloud (I'm sure not all clouds are the same). Have you asked the vendor what they think about the effect of the inclusions?

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

slg47: Yes, I talked with brian, and he said it's eye clean. I very much trust what he says...even though i must admit that my eyesight is very good..and i have seen inclusions in "eye clean" diamonds in the past. Also, would a table inclusion in a RB throw off more reflections than perhaps another cut?

yssie: I know exactly what you're talking about...and that's part of my confusion. Not sure if it's small and dense, etc...how deep...and if there will be any inclusion reflections....and if so, where will they be.

Thought I had done the majority of my homework for this purchase...but some of this stuff i don't think you can understand from reading about it. Maybe just have to have some experience touching lots of diamonds?

Thing is...when buying the BGSignature, I feel like the cut issue has been taken care of...and I am comfortable with a few different colors. Which leaves clarity...of which i am overly sensitive..and guess i can easily become hesitant when things are going on with the clarity that I don't quite understand.

Also, didn't want to imply that GarryH wrote to avoid table inclusions at all cost. Can't remember exactly what he did write...but think it was more along the lines of "be careful if the inclusion is in the table".

Why not ask Brian what he thinks? I understand the concern but we can't say anything definitively from just the clarity plot - he has the stone in hand and is in a much better position to tell you what you want to know :))

If you compare the face-up photo to the ASET to the idealscope, I think the answer will be "no". The photo is eye clean from what I can tell. The Idealscope is clean. The ASET shows a tiny bit of something on the 2:30 arrow, which I think would only be visible to the ASET scope.

In your case, however, with your eagle eyes...and your concerns about clarity...perhaps it would be better to look for another one because I think just knowing the cloud was there would force you to look for it whenever you looked for your ring. I do the same with borrowed microscopes, but I'm not doing it to think "oh, my diamond is flawed" -- I do it and think "dang, this thing is 100000 million years old, and there is a little universe / nebula inside my ring, that's so cool" ...

So I'm meeting with Brian on Tuesday....and to sort of prepare....took my girl out today to see some loose stones (roughly 2Cs). She seems to be much more color sensitive than i thought. She's a dermatologist...and is looking at slight color differences in moles, etc. all day long! So it seems like D-G is pretty much the same for her....but as soon as H starts...she seems to start seeing yellow very clearly.

I guess my ultimate goal here is to get something we will both LOVE (ie. no reason to think upgrade)...and now considering raising my budget up to 27-30K. So guess my question is, what exactly will that get me? Can i go 2.4 RB, G, VS2 (assuming the cut is an H&A type quality)??? If no, what would be a good compromise?

I really appreciate all advice here. This is a huge purchase for me.

Steven

Thanks for the suggestions slg47. My current thinking is that an H&A, 2.3C, G, SI1 might be the sweet spot for me. Will speak with brian in a few days...and see what ideas we can come up with. Maybe he has a Gish H that might work?
