On my hunt for finding "the perfect" one I happened to come across two diamonds that had the following written on the GIA report

Clarity Grade is Based on Internal Graining Not Shown

and also another diamond I found said the following

Clarity Grade is Based on Clouds Not Shown

The stones are both graded SI2 so I am a bit confused

The plot itself looks clear

Sample report

If the plot is clear, are either of these grades "ok"?

I've read that clarity based on clouds not shown and clean SI2 is usually too cloudy such that light performance is affected. I'm not sure about internal graining though. Can you see it for yourself or ask the jeweler's opinion?

I would be cautious with a SI2 clarity grade based on ' clouds that are not shown,' as there is a possibility there could be a loss of transparency or brilliance. The plots can be left blank as it would be difficult to illustrate the clouds or internal graining in some cases, this could also make the plotting diagram off putting to consumers and appear rather messy, so they are mentioned instead. Same with SI2 clarity grade based on internal graining not shown, personally I would want a trusted expert's honest evaluation of the diamond in question whether it is eye clean to the buyer's specifications and that there are no negative effects.

both of them could have issues that affect brightness, both could be fine.
I would want a vendor well versed in well cut diamonds to vet them for me if I were considering them.

It can have the same affect or worse than too many or too dense clouds.
One the other hand it can be ok, it depends on density and location.

In my experience Si1 clarity based upon clouds is a red flag for transparency issues. A high percentage that I have seen have had slightly diminished light performance from scattering of light. You would be lucky to find an Si2 with that notation that was crisp and bright.

The notation 'clarity grade based on internal graining not shown' is much less common. But I would apply the same advice as above. The best way to be sure is to compare these stones to otherwise equivalent diamonds with VS or better clarities and see if you can see any relative fogginess in the Si2.

If you do purchase a stone with a slight haziness, be sure to clean it well and often to keep it performing at peak. That is a good rule of thumb for any diamond, but particularly important for one with this characteristic.

In my experience, an SI2 based on clouds throughout or essentially whitish graining are pretty much going to look the same. Both will be hazy or milky. The graining SI2 is much more uncommon and is a highly avoided stone in the trade.
