Citrine for Great Aunt

So my Great Aunt has battled morbid obesity for years, she finally went to the doctors for it and they discovered that her most of her weight was caused by her lymph system not draining properly. She's recently had over 100 pounds of fluid removed, and her outlook on life has changed dramatically for the better. She goes in for another visit where the doctors think they can drain another 50-75 pounds of fluid again!

I would like to get her a piece of jewelry as a get well/encouragement/make-her-life-better/thinking-of-you present. I know there's a lot of fake citrine out there, so I thought you all would be able to help me find the real stuff. I don't know much about citrine. I'm looking to spend like 75 for piece. She's always loved citrine and fall, so I was thinking a stone that resembles an autumn leaf color in the orange/burnt orange range. It doesn't have to be substantial and open to a lot of designs, so if you're willing to help, it'd be greatly appreciated :D

Davi,
That is incredibly thoughtful of you. I’m so happy that your Aunt is so much better now and cannot imagine lugging around over 150 lbs of extra fluids! Are you thinking $75 for the citrine and setting? It’s probably best in silver (check out Etsy vendors) if you are on a tight budget and I think Doug of Bespoke sells inexpensive citrines. Another alternative is to see if Barry of ACS has any already set citrines that fit your requirements.

That is an amazing story! She probably feels like a new person. I recently got a pair of Bespoke citrines that are really beautiful and fall like. He has some beautiful rough, just remember all prices are in AUD. Your Aunt is lucky to have such a thoughtful Niece.

Thanks Chrono! Just sent Barry a note :D

The budget was for the stone, should have made that more clear.

Thanks Treen, she does have a thoughtful nephew :wink2: hahaha

From what my mom says, she does feel like a new person. She can lift her feet more than an inch off the ground now.

AUD is just a tad stronger than the USD :|

Hi Davi,

I know this may be sacriledge, but you could try one of the home shopping networks. A few people on PS bought a inexpensive ascher cut citrine ring on QVC for about 69.00 in sterling silver. I believe most citrine is heat treated, and is an accepted treatment for quartz.
You could look at HSN as well. I do not recommend JTV on principal, but you could look there as well.

I'm sure she will love it and remember you in her will!---Kidding!

Annette

Thanks Everyone!

Burbery and Smit, I'm going to stay away from rings because of the dramatic weight loss she's going through, and I'd like for her to be able to wear it all the time if they can't figure out how to manage the lymph issues.

I bought these from Barry Bell shaped citrines He says their just the right richness, anything darker would go brown.

I think they look like the tops of tulips, so I may have a pendant made to resemble such, fall and spring together... or a pair of nice earrings. Don't know yet, will have to see what they look like IRL.

Very pretty! Thanks very nice of you. :))

OOOOh they are awesome :appl: :appl: :appl:

sorry about the gender faux pas :nono:

Davi, what a neat story!!! You are a priceless nephew to think of this, I really mean it. LOVE the tulip idea & I'm sure she will too, a bright new beginning kind of flower. Unusual cut on the citrines & it works so well. She'll be truly touched by your thoughtfulness.

(If it had happened to me, they'd find 50 lbs. of M&Ms, ha!)

This is a quick mock up of what the pendant/necklace could look like. Now to find an artist :D

I LOVE those tulip citrines (confession: I'd been eying them for a while on Barry's site but couldn't figure out what I'd do with them; I was relieved to notice they were sold), and I think they'll look great in your pendant design.

I am wondering if perhaps the tulips (bezelled, prongs?) and leaves could be in 14kt or 18kt yellow gold layered onto a thin base rectangle of sterling silver with a "picture frame" type border in either silver or gold? Then the bail could suspend from the top of the frame? Otherwise, I can't quite conceive of where the bail could be placed unless out of the top of the citrines or the crossed stems?

In terms of jeweler/designer, I don't know if time is a factor, but I think Sally of Heart of Water (etsy) could do a wonderful version of your design...

I look forward to seeing how this pendant and your grandmother's bracelet turn out!

Those citrines are so unique and I love your design concept Davi.

Your Great Aunt's story is so touching, and your gesture is beyond endearing.

MaryMM, Thanks for the ideas, I took your ideas and integrated them into a new design. I am in contact with DanielM to see what they think they can do with my ideas. I did these drawings at work, and we don't have the best equipment or programs here. It was done with a scanner and paint

LTP: Awww shucks, thanks

Davi - glad my comments were of some help to you - I really like how you further fleshed out your tulip concept - this new design has a lovely sense of movement - and having the two bails is a neat addition. Daniel M does beautiful work, and I'm sure your great-aunt is going to treasure this special piece.

Lovely design Davi, glad someone is going to put those tulips citrines to good use. I suppose you're your Great Aunt's favourite?

I just wanted to say I'm glad they figured out what was wrong with your poor Great Aunt. That's so sad she had to suffer all those years. You're a very thoughtful nephew!
