choosing a shape AKA driving myself mad between emerald and asscher cut

Hi,

I have narrowed down what Iwant. I recently bought and returned a 3 stone round from blue nile. So I know I don''t want round now LOL. I am definately set on a step cut.

But I can''t decide between an asscher or emerald cut and am driving myself crazy. One day I''m set on asscher the next on emerald cut. I love them both and can''t decide! I''m afraid that once I buy one I''ll love it and then change my mind and want the other LOL.

How do you all decide when you are between 2 shapes? How do you get to where you are sure and wont'' regret it?

OK Emerald cut and asscher cut owners, tell me why you love your stones and do you have buyers remorse at all?

ECs and Asschers are so different even though they are both classified as step cuts. Have you seen them in person, side by side? My local jeweller had a couple and even though I adore asschers, they face up so small and it's really hard trying to see the steps all the time unless you wear loupes as your glasses, keep them really close to your eyes or have enough dough for at least a 2 carat asscher. What I did was get an EC for an e-ring and a coloured stone asscher as a RHR (where I can go bigger because coloured gemstones are less $$$ than a diamond).

I am super pleased with my EC. I still get broad flashes of fire with the large steps and love the scintillation.

I have seen them both in person and really like both! I have fairly large hands so I am definately concerned with the facing up small of asschers.

Glad to hear you are happy with your emerald cut.

My grandma had an emerald cut and my other grandma had a round. I remember as a kids being so fascinated with the emerald cut stone because it was so different from the ordinary.

I took tons of pictures a few weeks ago but sadly none of them turned out. I was so crushed.

I thought I''d take a break and try again sometime later.

why would you not get another asscher?...sorry newbie here and i have noticed in other threads you posted you wouldn''t get another asscher...im sorry if you explained in other threads.

Have you tried on both shapes? The squareness of the asscher will flatter some hands (not mine!) while the more elongated shape of the EC will flatter others. If you love both, I would see which cut looks best on you. Personally if I had to choose I would go for an EC, no doubt. So, so elegant and classic.

Sure. They face up small, and mine has good spread for an asscher and is very well cut. There is a thread asking asscher owners the downside to asschers. They have small spread, are hard to keep clean, are mistaken for princesses a lot and IMO, are hard to fine the perfect setting for. For me it''s about the diamond, but also about the ring as a whole. Unless I would afford a large asscher that I could set as a solitare I wouldn''t get another.

If I were to get a step cut, I''d get an EC because I like how E/W EC''s look when set. And I like them with side stones. I love asschers with baguettes, but only in the 2 carat and above size on my hand.

Many asscher owners on here have traded theirs in recently for other shapes.

My adivce to you is to think of the ring as a whole instead of as a sum of its parts. Find the look you want, then buy the center stone. If you fall in love with a setting that looks perfect with an EC buy and EC... an asscher .. by that. But be sure I know what it is going to look like on your hand before you buy it.

thank you for the reply...i love this board and im happy i found it before i proposed to my fiance...i got her an asscher (square emerald) 1.05 c and she loves it...i read the thread you mentioned in regards to the downside of the asscher...i was worried about how they face up, but after seeing the diamond in person i knew it was the perfect one....but i was going through a similar problem in regards to rings and spent much more than i wanted to on a Mark Schnieder Inspire band that he tweaked himself (if you ever in long beach, ca he''s great, and his staff lurk on this site lol) and he really brought out the asscher and it actually looks bigger in his setting...ill post some pics when i get home from work in this thread

I have always wanted a round, I remember my mother saying something about about a round diamond when I was a small child. I fell in love with pears for a while, they are stunning...but always drawn back to rounds.

I think which ever stone 'feels' right to you (much like the 3 stone did not).... Good luck.

My personal preference is for an EC. But I love elongated shapes and don''t tend to love the square shapes (hence my non-square cushion). Try on both and see which one flatters your hand, you might find out you hate both on your hand!

I don''t know if you''ll EVER be 100% content really, especially hanging on here. There is always something else to want...
