I recently bought a shared-setting eternity ring from a friend. It''s around 2 Ct & it''s beautiful. The ring should be G, VS. However, I just bought a 10X loupe & discover that the edge of almost ALL of the diamond in the eternity band has been chipped. Then, I look at the ring closely with my naked eyes & I can see that the edge of the diamonds is not smooth at all. Some of the chips are bigger than others. Now, what do I do? Since there are so many chips around the diamond, will the ring no longer be VS quality? Will the diamond become less sparkly just because the diamond has been chipped at the edge? Will the ring depreciate in value drastically because the diamonds are chipped? Thank you,

Unfortunately, chips will devalue the diamonds and they may not be graded as VS anymore.

Is the eternity band new? If so, I''d return it! If it''s not new then you should discover how the chips took place. Did you wear it against another diamond ring? If so some brushing could have occured if the band touched other diamonds. If the two rings were "meant" to go together, i.e. sold as a set, then you should take the band to the jeweler and try to get them to replace the stones. If they were not, do you have any insurance? If you do, then you should ask them whether this is "wear and tear" or damage which can be replaced.

Chips do affect the clarity rating of stones: given what you''re describing, your ring if probably closer to the SI range than the VS range now. Chips do affect the sparkle to some degree ... but you describe the ring as beautiful, so I''m guessing it''s not necessarily eye-visible. Damage will, of course, affect value.

If you love the ring, if you got a good price, if you think it would damage the friendship to raise the issue, enjoy your new shiney and don''t give it a second thought. If it bugs you, talk to your friend, the sooner the better, and the more diplomatically the better.

Oh, what a bummer. I know how it feels to buy something that you''re thrilled with, and then discover that maybe it''s not as great as you thought.

That said, I think circe is right:

The chips will decrease the value. Do you love it? Did you get a great deal? Can you see the chips without your loupe?
