Chipped OEC - how to fix?

I've inherited a loose OEC that's a lovely stone but has some significant copping on the girdle and on a couple of the crown and pavilion facets. I think it will need to be recut to some degree to fix these issues. I don't want to get it cut to a modern RB, just get it in better shape before I have it set. Is there a best way to go about this?

I'll add some pictures when I have something better than my cell phone :)

Depending on how deep some of the nicks are, you might be able to get away with just a repolishing of the facets. You can inquire at BGD for more information. They also do recuts on old cut stones (not into modern RBs but spiff it up a little).

I would personally contact Good Old Gold since they have a cutter who is cutting new OEC's for them. I think that would be my first choice for an OEC.

Where are you? I had my 2.38 re-polished recently by the owner at Liberty Diamonds in Irvine, CA. The girdle and crown facets were pretty gnarled up and the guy I went to did a fantastic job. He's been cutting all his life.

What size is the OEC. It's really only worth it if it's a larger stone 75 plus points (some would say larger).

I had my OEC's fixed at BGD. It's 350 a carat with a 1 carat minimum. I've referred friends to them as well, and the results have always been great: minimum spread loss, maximum performance boost (just polishing those facets can take a stone from lovely to WOWZA!).

Thanks everyone, I will make some calls and see -> good to hear there are a few options. I don't have a cert for the stone and haven't gotten it apprasied so I'm not sure about specs, except that it's pretty white face up, has some warmth from the side, and is supposed to be over 1 ct. I was just a little worried when I saw the shape it was in... I wasn't expecting it to be chipped...

Here are a couple of pictures - hope it's not too bad.

Beautiful stone and it is always worth a try to restore it. My 3.05 transition cut apparently had some chips on the girdle b/c the girdle is now faceted. I love it more that way. I love your diamond. It is beautiful! Love love love old stones!

Beautiful pattern on it though! Could you consider doing a semi-heavy bezel to cover the chip up? Hopefully you are able to get some opinions on whether it is a good candidate for a recut.

it's a beautiful stone!! do you intend to re-cut because you are afraid of further damage?
Perhaps the first thing to do would be having a professional assess whether this risk exists.
If re-cutting is not necessary, but you still feel uncomfortable with the chips exposed, you could also consider setting it in a bezel?

ps- lol, I see pandabee thought the same while I was writing. Wink! pandabee :naughty:
