Hi,
I have not posted here in ages but I really need some help. My sister received a stunning engagement ring a little less than 6 months ago from BlueNile.com. It is a platinum setting with vertical baguettes and a round center diamond. Her fiance really went over his budget to get her something that she loved.
Now (less than 6 months later) two of her baguettes are chipped. They refuse to replace them, stating when the ring was purchased it was in good quality and they stand behind their products. They have a 90 day warranty. She is devastated. She never wears her ring to clean, she is a teacher so there is nothing excessive there. BlueNile now is saying the particular setting very fragile.
We both feel that if that were the case then it should have been noted somewhere for consumers to see. They are thinking of trying to sell the ring she loves and then buy a new ring "because we can''t afford to replace the diamonds every six months"
The customer service representative they are dealing with is checking to see if they can possibly return it, or perhaps put it in another setting. She understandably does not want another setting from a company she does not trust. They are checking with the insurance policy they took out to see if it will be of any assistance. She is afraid that if they repair it this time and it keeps chipping that their rates will increase ect.
Is BlueNile responsible at all? What is the best option in this case? Any advice or information would be really helpful. And sadly be careful if buying from bluenile. Thanks in advance.

I'm so sorry that is happening to your sister. It truly stinks.

But the truth of the matter is that diamonds actually aren't that hard to break if struck in the right way. Is your sister 100% positive that she never banged the ring on a counter, door, etc? Because that is a pretty easy way to chip stones. Despite what people think, diamonds are very hard and thus hard to scratch, but actually easier than you would believe to break.

While it would be great if bluenile would help her out this once, I'm not sure that it is their fault...things happen unfortunately. If I were her, I would get it repaired and then if things still continue to happen, contact them again.

Because they've chipped and not fallen out or anything, I think it is more than likely that she hit it on something.

Sorry.

That really does stink, but I agree with neatfreak. I have heard stories about hitting the ring on a shoppping cart resulting in a cracked diamond. They are hard, but definitely not indestructable. Hit in just the right spot with just enough force can easily cause damage.

I''m so sorry your ring was damaged. Is this your setting here? If so, the baguettes do look very exposed. They really shouldn''t sell a setting like that. The danger of chipping is exactly the reason you almost never see the corners of baguettes exposed like they are in this setting.

If you buy a new Toyota then five months later notice dings on the door and fender, who pays to have it repaired? It's the buyer's responsibility to determine whether the product is satisfactory within the return period. That said, if it's the ring in urseberry's photo, I can't believe that anyone would sell a setting with unprotected corners/points like that.

I agree with the above that BN isn’t at fault here but they may be helpful in getting it repaired for a reasonable price. I don’t know if they have a repair department or not, ask. There are, of course, lots of jewelers who would like to earn your business through this sort of work and they can be competitive at it. It may not be as expensive as you fear. Armed with the numbers you can make a sensible decision about whether it’s worth the claims activity on your insurance policy.

I agree with the above that this is a bad design for a ring intended for daily wear.
