my husband bought a beautiful H & A diamonds (excellent HCA rating) stone for our engagement 3 years ago from one of the very reputable jewelers on this site who we will use again. it chipped - i noticed it because i am obsessed there was a slight cloudiness in a spot on the edge and further inspection revealed the chip. needless to say i was crazed. funny, i still received compliments on my sparkly ring after. it worked out in terms of insurance we received the full amount of the cost of the diamond. is this just a random fluky thing?
the good thing is i am going to get an upgrade , i was thinking about sacrificing clarity (going with an "eye clean"-S1) staying with a high color and excellent cut to get a larger diamond than I would with a higer clarity. but now i am extremely paronoid- the diamond that chipped was a VS2.

Take the diamond of your choice to an independent appraiser. They'll be abke to tell you whether any inclusions represent a risk to the durability of the diamond. Protecting against random events is harder, unless you want to mount it in a more protected setting. Perhaps a lower setting (if it was set high) might help as well?

Linny, did the cert on your diamond indicate that it had an "extremely thin", or possibly "very thin" girdle?

The thickness of the girdle is one of your primary protections against chipping. Anywhere from "thin" to "slightly thick" is considered in the ideal range.
