It all started about a year ago when I bought this 2.09 blue sapphire preloved while on the hunt for the holy grail. It's a chubby oval measuring approx. 7x6mm and the colour sits somewhere close to peacock blue. A beautiful stone, really. Incredibly lively for a sapphire, super sparkly. Full of all those flaws that would make most people turn away because they're after perfection, and this one couldn't be further from it.

The decision how to set it was almost made for me by fate, deities, powers unseen, whatever you wanna call it. I'd wanted a three-stone ring for some years, and it seemed the universe conspired to give me everything needed to have it.

To start, literal days after getting the sapphire I saw that @chere had listed a pair of OEC studs for sale in the preloved section that seemed suitable to be used as side stones. They ended up being a perfect match - not just proportion-wise, but also in terms of brilliance and liveliness. And since I liked the studs so much and didn't want them to go to waste (their particular screw-backs are crazy comfortable), I got a pair of lab OECs for them. I wear them all the time, even now. Overall, one of the best impulse buys I've made.

And then, mere days before the earrings arrived, gildedlane posted this ring which hooked me almost instantly and became the main inspiration for the design. The element that drew me with greatest force was the engraving on the band. I shamelessly admit I straight up copied that. The baskets for the stones were the quite the opposite - I knew I wanted to change those but wasn't sure how. We went through some iterations but in the end @Dr_Diesel provided the solution by giving me and allowing me to use one of his own basket designs.

For this ring I decided to work with a jeweller that had already done work for me before, including one tricky restoration, but never a complete project from scratch like this one. I placed the order and left the stone and the earrings with them on the 4th of April. The ring was supposed to be done in a month. Six gruesome months later I finally picked up the finished ring on the 2nd of October. Hooray!

Needless to say, I will think twice before going back for a project like this. I'm usually happy with their level of craftsmanship but their management is dropping the ball hard. It was frustrating to have to constantly push and nag to get things done due to how disorganised and mismanaged things were. Still, the ring as a whole is well made. And I think we really nailed it with the design.

The finished ring is made of 18k gold, yellow for the band and white for the head. Centre stone is the aforementioned blue sapphire flanked by two ~3,6mm antique OECs (G-H, SI per appraisal).

Why name it Cashmere, you might ask? On one hand, this is a nod towards a funny situation that folks from the CS section might remember. But really, it's because when I got this sapphire I proudly proclaimed I didn't need to buy any more blue sapphires, this one ticked all the boxes. Only, there was one blue sapphire I still would've bought if given the chance. And unexpectedly I was given the chance. And I got it, and that one was Velvet. So now I have Velvet and Cashmere. See what I did there, hehe? *wink-wink*

IMG_2621.JPG

Velvet will be my next project, probably sometime in 2026.

Wow, perfect. The color of Cashmere is gorgeous, and looks great with the yellow gold shank. The diamonds are so lively. Enjoy!! Can you let us know who made the setting? It’s beautiful.

I love it! It really turned out fabulously & to my eye, that sapphire is the most perfect blue.

 It's amazing and I'm so jealously covetous of that color.
Just such a lovely thing, it really is as smooth as cashmere.

Lovely lovely lovely. Blue and white diamonds really pop, no doubt.

Is the white gold plated or unplated?

Wow wow wow.. that blue is amazing! Love the contrast against the white oecs. It was well worth the wait!

Fabulous and I love the setting… mixed metals practical and beautiful. Wear her with joy!

Wow!! That blue is mesmerizing!

I don't think a 3-stone ring can get much prettier than this... the stones, the milgrain at the base, the crown mountings, the engraving, the two-tone gold. It's glorious. Wear her in good health and happiness!

What a beautiful stone and ring. I love the proportions, those triple crowns, the two-tone, and the engraving. You clearly put a lot of thought into the combination! But it's wild how much work you had to put into seeing Cashmere in her home. Amazing job persisting, and hopefully Velvet will be much much easier!

Stunning. The profile is magnificent and the color is off the charts. Velvet, pay attention because the bar has been set pretty darn high!

Elegant and amazing! So beautiful, the stones and the execution. I’d say, worth the wait!

Your ring is gorgeous @Avondale! Everything about it is stunning!!!
Well worth the wait.

Gosh that colour is incredible!

I thought Cashmere was a nod to Kashmir to be honest! Whilst my (untrained!) eye can’t really tell sapphires by origin, the colour is really dazzling.

Out of interest, do you know / do you want to find out the origin?

I am sure the wait for it to be completed was agonizing, but you definitely chose the correct jeweler. The ring is simply gorgeous and the blue of the sapphire is fabulous! Wear and enjoy for all time - love it!!

Wow, perfect. The color of Cashmere is gorgeous, and looks great with the yellow gold shank. The diamonds are so lively. Enjoy!! Can you let us know who made the setting? It’s beautiful.

I'd rather not, if you don't mind. The thing is, I would dox the city I live in like this. The jeweller is local to me, they aren't in the US. I doubt anyone here would ever come even remotely close to having work done by them.

I love it! It really turned out fabulously & to my eye, that sapphire is the most perfect blue.

Thank you! I'm sure there are better sapphires out there but this one has my heart so I can fully agree with it being the most perfect. ::)

 It's amazing and I'm so jealously covetous of that color.
Just such a lovely thing, it really is as smooth as cashmere.

You know, for a bit, at the beginning, I was all like "but cashmere is fuzzy :eek2:", and then I decided I just don't care.

Lovely lovely lovely. Blue and white diamonds really pop, no doubt.

Is the white gold plated or unplated?

Well, when I was first sharing my idea you did say it was a classic combination and "simply must be done". You were right!

The white gold is plated but it probably won't be replated. The base white gold they used is pretty white, doesn't have the warm tint I'm used to seeing. It's going to take ages for the rhodium to rub off, and when it does, I doubt it will be all that noticeable. But, you know, the option's always there.

Wow wow wow.. that blue is amazing! Love the contrast against the white oecs. It was well worth the wait!

That's what I've been repeating to myself, too, to avoid being severely annoyed at how long it took - it was worth the wait! :D

Fabulous and I love the setting… mixed metals practical and beautiful. Wear her with joy!

Thank you! I also love how the mixed metal look ended up. It has a bit of a vintage vibe, you don't see it much in modern production.

Wow!! That blue is mesmerizing!

I dare not admit how many hours I have spent just staring at it during the past year. Okay, half year. It did spend six months with the jeweller, after all... :???:

I don't think a 3-stone ring can get much prettier than this... the stones, the milgrain at the base, the crown mountings, the engraving, the two-tone gold. It's glorious. Wear her in good health and happiness!

I dearly appreciate the compliment. That's a tall order, considering where we are and what one can find in the 3-stone ring thread.

You're so kind! Yes, this project took it's toll, I won't deny it. For some reason I just can't catch a break with blue sapphire rings, there's always something that goes wrong. I will have to choose very carefully who I work with for Velvet. I feel this need, this necessity for things to go well and smooth just once, you know?

Wow what a pretty color!
thankyou.gif

Stunning. The profile is magnificent and the color is off the charts. Velvet, pay attention because the bar has been set pretty darn high!

I have no idea how I'm going to set Velvet! I said Cashmere couldn't be further from perfection, well, Velvet could hardly be closer to it. Every idea I've had so far ended up being dismissed because it just doesn't feel good enough for this stone. I certainly have my work cut out for me.

Thank you! Well worth, indeed, although I'd rather not repeat it.

Out of interest, do you know / do you want to find out the origin?

Well... you're not too far away from the origin of the joke.

I don't know the origin. The lab report (it's from AIGS) doesn't have it. I did take the stone to my local gemologist early in the year because I was curious, and she spent about an hour with it but sadly nothing conclusive came out of it. The heat treatment has removed most of the inclusions that would've otherwise helped determine the origin. There are two crystals inside that are obscured by large and dense frosted halos. She said she's almost certain she's seeing tourmaline crystals (IYKYK) and based on her other findings there was about 85% certainty, but if it was not that, there weren't any other indications of a different origin, so it remains indeterminate. Still a fun experience.

Here's the thing, though - when I told the story over in the CS section (because c'mon, it's entertaining) the fellow PSers joined in on the fun and said "gratz, you have a kashmir now, haha". It was all giggles and laughs until this one poster comes along, all indignant, and starts going on about how I should send the sapphire to at least two reputable labs to confirm the origin before I can sell it as Kashmir. And we're all like, what? Anyway, they eventually abandoned their quest for justice or whatever that was, and Dr_Diesel made this:

VerY ofFIciAL SSEF LaB rePoRT - signed.jpg

I kid you not, I almost fell off my chair laughing. I laughed probably for 3 straight minutes, my face was hurting.

So this is partially where "Cashmere" comes from. I just decided not to name it a tragedeigh and opted for the traditional spelling. :D

I am sure the wait for it to be completed was agonizing, but you definitely chose the correct jeweler. The ring is simply gorgeous and the blue of the sapphire is fabulous! Wear and enjoy for all time - love it!!

The jeweller himself is skilled, indeed, and I trust his hands unconditionally. Plus, he has a deep appreciation for coloured stones which, honestly, not many people here do. It's all diamonds, left and right, but the moment you want a splash of colour, there is none to be seen. It's the manager of the place that's not up to par. And, in true bad manager fashion, they're nowhere to be seen so you can't even raise a concern. The front desk and the bench are doing their best but they're essentially crippled by the poor management.

What a beautiful ring - the sapphire is such a rich color!!!

Wow! That blue is amazing! The OEC side stones make it pop just that much more! Really nice!

Yes, with this stone the colour is the ultimate redeeming quality. On paper it's riddled with flaws - a huge visible veil, colour zoning, fat bottom, a bit of windowing... But then you see the blue and all the rest of it fades away.

Wow! That blue is amazing! The OEC side stones make it pop just that much more! Really nice!
Woah, what a gorgeous blue and those side stones are just everything!

I did not expect to love the OECs so much in person, I admit. I'm not much of a diamond person and before I received them I considered them just a necessary element of the design - after all, you can't have a three stone ring without side stones. But they're so so so nice, and they work with the blue so so so well, that I can't imagine any other pair of diamonds could take their place.

It's also why I pulled them out of the earrings and set labs in their place. I mean, otherwise why not just use the labs for the ring, right, why take the long route? But they just have character. And every time I look at them I wonder how many pieces of jewellery they used to be part of in their lifetime. The allure of really old things.

You and me both, girl, six month of waiting are not for the faint of heart!

Couple more photos. The weather is still dreary. Clouds and rain, and very little light. Little miss Cashmere doesn't mind too much as she gets to show off her deeper blues shades.

You should see her on a bright sunny day. She loves the sun!

Since we currently lack bright sunny days, in the meantime here's something really cool about her. She conceals a secret she reveals under UV light - a hidden flame:

1759966260447.png

For those curious, the explanation behind this fascinating orange fluorescence is centred around the colour zoning. This whole orange part you see - that's where the crystal is transparent, colourless or nearly colourless. That's the part that fluoresces.

Whoever cut this one did it very efficiently. You'd never guess such a large part of it lacks almost all colour by normal viewing alone, you'd have to see it upside down for it to become clearly visible.

She's so beautiful! The color is just insane and the UV photo is so cool. I hate how demonized fluorescence seems to have become, because it's just such a neat geological/gemological feature.

I wish we could just hear the thoughts of some of these really clever cutters. It's one reason I enjoy watching the youtube videos from Black Opals Direct so much, since it gives at least a little taste of the thought process.

I adore fluorescence! It makes everything so much more interesting! Granted, it's undeniable it can sometimes affect a diamond's appearance negatively, but in the world of coloured stones it can only be an advantage. When you think of rubies and jedi spinels, for example, fluorescence is what makes them the special treasures that they are!

Also, it's wild how often sapphires fluoresce, and people don't even suspect. Everyone who owns sapphires should pull out their UV torch (provided they have one) and go to town.

I'm another fan of Black Opal Direct and his YouTube channel. It's so interesting to observe the thought process, as you say, to see the decision making, the actual cutting and the end result. Gives you a new appreciation for cutters and gemstones.

Gorgeous blue, beautiful setting. Wow! I wanted to “ love” your post twice!

What a beautiful blue!!!! Am on Ban Island writing assignments so your ring is a lovely distraction!

I love how perfect the proportions are! And that blue!!!
