Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice about Cartier's large tank solo watch and I'm hoping someone can help, here's the deal.....
My DH graduates from law school in May and I have secretly been saving for the past year to buy him the Cartier watch above as part of his graduation gift (the other part is I want to take him and some close friends away for a weekend). Anyway at the rate I'm saving I should have enough money saved by May to buy him this watch, but as fate would have it when I was walking through town this morning I saw that exact watch in the window of the jewelry store. I decided to go in and ask about it and I was told it's a used watch on consignment, and they're selling it for $1500 (retail is $2300, and I have enough saved to buy the used one today). I asked how old it was and if it was still covered under Cartier's warranty, she wasn't sure and said she would check with the owner and I should call back later today. Now here are my questions:
-Does it really matter if it's still covered under Cartier's warranty? I have no idea how much watch repairs cost or how often/if they happen
-is $1500 a good price, and should I try to negotiate?
-if something needs to be done to it, can we still bring it to Cartier? (it has the certificate of authenticity and paperwork)
- is it even a good idea to buy a used watch? Honestly I never thought about it until I saw this one this morning, but would I be better off waiting until May and paying full price from Cartier directly?
Any opinions on buying used vs new would be greatly appreciated!
