I noticed that diamonds of a similar weight have different measurements and was wondering if
7.19 vs a 7.34 Cushion stone
would have any "larger" appearance and

a 7.66 vs a 8.06 Round Stone ??

(saw diamonds on whiteflash)

Upon close inspection you can discern a 0.1mm difference in size, especially if the items being compared are held side by side. At a distance of 15" it might take 0.2mm to see any difference. Diamonds of identical weight have different diameters and corresponding different depths. The specific gravity of diamond is a constant, so the weight has to be somewhere.

The different measurements you mentions in your post would look different to almost anyone. It might not matter except when they are side by side, however.

hi jewelgal,

just thought id say hi because i get excited whenever i see anyone looking for cushions.
appl.gif

are you torn between a cushion and a RB?

Thanks David !! Very interesting!

Reena - hello! YES I can't figure out which shape i love more, the round or cushion! I am a lover of antiques and want to stay true to that - which means i should get a cushion cut, right? I can't find many photos of them on this site... i wish i could see more. i tried on one that was a 1.27? and it looked very very small! I was hoping it would appear larger than a round, like ashley judd's!!
At what size point does a cushion 'appear' larger than a round???
Do u have a cushion or round??

HI:

I don't have a stone yet but i am 100% getting a cushion. Personally, i love them because they look elegant and antique--like you said--and also because they are unique (as opposed to a more common shape like a RB). But, everyone says that you can't beat the RB for brilliance, so that may be a consideration. for me, it was no contest.

have you gone to look at a number of cushions v. RBs in person? that may be the best way to figure out what type of look you like. they really look very different. do i recall that you are in NYC? if so, the diamond district is a great place to go BROWSE because they have so many stones of all different shapes and will let you try on and compare to your heart's content. (although its not SO easy to find cushions as a walk-in, you may have to try a few places.) i wouldn't necessarily buy in the DD without doing research on your vendor first (as i mentioned on another post i can give you a recommendation for a NYC vendor if you need one).

as far as size it's hard to say, your 1.27 may have looked small because it was cut deep. (for whatever reason i've noticed that a lot of the cushions ive looked at have been rather deep.) also, ive noticed that loose stones always look smaller than you think they're going to, no matter how big the carat size!!!

im really not familiar with RBs so i couldn't say whether one shape generally looks bigger than the other--i think that whether RB or cushion it's really all about how the stone is cut. if you want to compare the size (ie how big it will look to your eye) of two given stones, look at the measurements (l x w x h)--but bigger isn't necessarily better in terms of brilliance and cut quality.

since you said you wanted to see some more cushions, ill try to post some pics!

Reena, your dog is SO adorable and cute! precious!!!!!
Yes i would love to see cushions, and we might go to nyc on sat. and see cushions. and yes, will u give me that recommendation for a dealer there??

last night my cousin said he got his fiance's ring at fidelity, any advice?

well that will be fun! i loooove going to look at stones, esp cushions. if you're planning to go to the DD you will probably need to actually go up to the vendors and ask whether they have any cushions with the specs that you're interested in--they're not usually just hanging out in the windows. do you know approx what size/color/clarity you're looking for?

don't know anything about fidelity, but you should search this site to see if anyone else does.

as far as the vendor reccomendation, mark at engagementringsdirect(.com) has been working TIRELESSLY to find me the perfect cushion for a couple of weeks now. (and i think he's done it!

) i would not hesitate to recommend him to you (he has an office in midtown so you could go in to see the stones.) check out the website for contact info.

im glad you like my little buddy roosevelt. he makes me happy. i looooove him.

The Ashley Judd Cushion . . .

Antique (or OMC) cushions usually ARE cut deep, that's just their nature.

I have a 1.25 c OMC, and it DOES look smaller than other 1.25's that I've seen - it actually is closer in size to a 1ct.

But I love it for many reasons: (ahem, ahem)

1) It has AMAZING FIRE! - which, by the way, makes it seem bigger (to me, anyways) just b/c of it's unique "personality"
2) It is a very unique and special shape - no one else has one just like it
3) It seems to sparkle from all angles

There are many more reasons, of course, these are just the top 3

Reena! Those are gaw-jus - (ny accent)

i love how the cushions look like a chunk of stone, they look very unique and not modern at all, very elegant...
Is it true that these stones show their color more than a round? like an "i" might see more color vs a round?

mmmm, maybe i'll get a cushion - can't decide! the cushion i tried on was 7.17 mm and very very small on my size 7 finger... it looked smaller than the round that size, so i would have to go up....
love.gif

post as many as u can!!!!! does britney have a cushion?
do u have any pics of cushion on ashley judd's Hand?

hi, its really a personal decision of what you like best. maybe an OEC is a good compromise for you--rounder, but antique looking.

when you say the 7.17mm cushion looked smaller than a round of that size--do you mean that both the round and the cushion measured 7.17 (by the way is that l or w? you're missing one dimension there--well, actually two.
1.gif
) but the cushion looked smaller than the RB? not sure how if the two had the exact same measurements (as opposed to carat size) one could look bigger than the other, but perhaps. in any event for a stone of either shape it's all going to depend on how it's cut, so i wouldn't necessarily rule out one shape or the other as generally looking smaller. you'd be able to find a good stone in the size you want in either cut.

britney does indeed have a cushion, 5c i think. ill find the pic and post it. the only pic of ashley judd's on her hand is from very far away, so you can't really see anything.

i love those rings. i think cushion cut can be an exquisite and special stone. i hope to get a cushion and/or a royal asscher- one day (a girl must have dreams). good luck with your choice.

Reena, post more cushions! they are gawjus!

i love how the cushions look when they are B-i-g! like ashley or britney's.

and i wouldn't like a round stone if it was that big -funny, right?

i think those cushions look very elegant bec. they look "soft" and not
like a harsh sparkle..... can't explain,.
wavey.gif

oh, i totally know what you mean, don't worry. the big ones are to die for. i esp like the harry winston one with the pear sidestones--this is almost making me rethink my pave bezel idea.

i'll try to find some more to post!

and HERE is a jawdropping 3+ carat OEC ring . . . be careful you may lose control of various bodily functions.

i thought you might like this cut because it sort of combines the antique look of a cushion with the shape of a round.
