If a 1ct is only 6mm in dimensions, rather than the typical 6.5mm, does that indicate that it was poorly cut? Or can a 6mm 1ct still retain an "ideal" cut rating?

A diameter of 6 mm in a 1 ct. RB indicates that the stone is deep and was cut for weight retention. It will hide its weight in places you cannot see, but pay for anyway - in the girdle and the pavilion, for example.

I don't believe it would remain an ideal cut......it would have to be too deep, thereby pushing the pavilion out of ideal range.

6mm translates to a .85-.90 carat size. In a 1 ct size, you're getting a diamond with very poor light performance.

A 1 Ct. of 6 mm. is not a poorly cut, it is extremely poorly cut.

Even if, with the latest cut-studies, one could find a combination of crown and pavillion angles (highly unlikely), that still give this stone a high light performance, it would still be a 6mm-stone with a high light performance in comparison to a 6.5 mm-stone with a similar high light performance.

So, if you care about cut-quality, go for a great cut at 0.78 Ct for 6 mm.
Probably, it will be even less expensive than the 1Ct, that you are looking right now.

Live long,

Paul
