I''m ready to buy a stone that this GIA certified. My jeweller is now telling me that he can''t find the original certificate. He does say that the diamond has the GIA # inscribed on it, and he has that number, and also the specs that match the stone. He says he''ll get the cert for me in a few weeks, but I''m reluctant to make a payment without the original.

Should I be concerned, or its pretty easy to get the certificate? The jeweller is known to a few family friends, so I do trust him.

Don't worry too much.

Call GIA with the report number and explain your situation. They should be willing to confirm that the report number you have matches the parameters given (or not). It takes them a few weeks to produce a copy of a report and they do this for a relatively reasonable fee. Naturally the jeweler should pay the fee. Have your appraiser check to make sure the inscription is there and then go ahead. Have the jeweler write on the invoice that you have paid for a GIA report and that it hasn't been delivered yet.

I don''t think it''s that unusual. But I would not buy it right now unless he agrees that your return period starts on the day you receive the actual GIA, and not on the day you pay. Otherwise, if for some reason something on the GIA bothers you, you may be past your return period by the time you get it.

Good luck.
