My friend is shopping for an e-ring and is looking for something antiquey for around $500-$600. He also mentioned that he wanted the diamond to be as close to the finger as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is the budget to include the diamond?

He already has the stone (1/2 ct RB) so the price is just for the setting.

I'd absolutely look for a geniune antique in that price range, whether your budget is for just the setting or the center stone too. You can get a LOT more for your money that way. Antique style brand new settings are way pricer than the real deal. I found the perfect antique filigree platinum setting for $600 for my e-ring, it's die struck, pierced, hand engraved and has about 1 ct of melee. If I'd tried to get that made new, it would have at at LEAST an extra 0 tacked on to the price. It took me a year of looking since I needed it to fit a 3.5 ct diamond- but since you don't have that constraint, it should take much less time to find something.

Search eBay, and check out local antique stores and pawn shops in your area.

Also jewelryrings.com is pretty good for cast repros of antique settings- they're not fabulous quality (when compared with an acutal antique setting, that is) but the price is right and the owner, Kim Wheeling, is very good about customizing them for various sizes and shapes. I've used them for setting several colored stones and whatnot. Their stuff is typically made from casts of actual antique settings so, though the detail level is lower and they're cast and not die struck, the styles are very believably antique.
