My FI''s engagement ring is spinnging a bit, and she wants to get it resized... Can anyone recommend a reputable shop in Boston to have this done? She''d very much prefer somewhere where they do the work on site, and are not shipping out the stone somewhere...

Thanks!

did you look under the resource section for boston jewelers? If it were me, I''d just try to find a family owned jewelry store that has an on-site benchman and go from there. Where did you get the ring from? If it''s a designer setting or a custom ring, you may need to ship it back to the place you got it, even for sizing, to avoid lossing the warranty (if there is one).

The only place I know of that doesn''t ship off site are a couple of places in the jeweller''s building. I''m not a fan of Barmakian''s, but I did take DH''s wedding band to get sized there and it was done in 5 minutes with no charge (I didn''t buy the ring there, but he did buy my wedding band there--I''m assuming they normally charge?). The thing is, I''m not sure if the quality of the work is that great. DH got my e-ring from Shreve, Crump & Low and when I got it sized it took a few weeks, but the work they did was great--I had it sized 1.5 sizes, so it wasn''t easy and it came back perfect. At Barmakian''s, there was a distinct line that showed in DH''s wedding band, though now it''s evened out.

yeah, it was pretty worthless... said the nearest one was Good old Gold on Long Island in NY... haha... Setting is pretty simple... the SC Tiffany replica...

doesn''t SC have a warranty on the setting? I''d check with them and make sure it''s ok for someone else to even size it if it''s important to you to retain the warranty. I think demalza had a someone else set her stone into that setting and the jeweler doing the work discovered the ring had porosity issues. She had a heck of a time getting it fixed b/c SC wouldn''t stand by their product since someone else touched it.

Sna77, I''m sure you''ve already thought of this, but do take into consideration whether or not your current setting has a warranty that might possibly be voided if you have any outside party work on it.

If it doesn''t, or if you''re aware but unconcerned with that factor, I''d suggest contacting a local appraiser and asking for a recommendation for a local benchman. One appraiser in your area that comes to mind is Jeff Averbook of Metro Jewelry Appraisers in Medford. He posts here on Pricescope, and I''m sure he could help you identify a benchman who does work onsite.

They do... BUT... they don''t do any work onsite at all... Everything is sent offsite, and everything takes forever to come back... My FI is not going to be happy not having her ring for a month for a 10 minute re-size job...

Plus, it''d be much easier in the future having someone local where we can take it rather than having to get to Manhattan on a weekday...

Hiya,
There''s a place in the Commonwealth hotel shops called Persona Jewelry that resized my friend''s e-ring. I have plans to get there this week to get a quote on re-working a co-workers ring. I haven''t used them myself, but all the things they said to my friend and what they charged her seemed on the mark; I know they do the benchwork in house. Might be worth a call.

That''s great, thanks. I''ll give them a call.

Just wanted to follow up witht hsi thread for anyone that might need the info in the future...

My fiancé ended up going with the place that our appraiser, Jeff Averbook had recommended and they did a great job. Here''s the info:

Bostonian Jewlers
333 Washington Street, suite 710-713

Here''s te cut and paste on email from FI:
Just got back from ring sizing....I met with the wife Alexandria (Alex). I''m back to a 3.5...they were really nice and did an excellent job. It still spins a bit when its cold, but they even measured my nuckle w/ some tool and they recommended the 3.5... They made me try a wedding band on too to show how having a band will help with that and also explained come spring/summer, the ring will fit perfectly. They do not recommend putting those beads on the ring at all to prevent spinning! They use a laser and the women explained that as well. I''m really happy with it. $90 later....

Well, I''m too late but I would have said to never size a ring in the winter! But it sounds like they didn''t let her size it too small. It definitely fits better when you have on the wedding band. Have you gone to look at those yet? I remember you posted about it recently.

Well... actually her ring started out as a 3.5 last year when we got engaged... She had a minor accident where she jammed her hand in a door about 6 months ago, and had to have the ring cut off... We just took it to a local place in Boston, and they stretched it out to fit on her right hand (she couldn''t wear it on her left hand until the doctor said it was OK a few weeks ago)... Oh, her left hand is a 3.5 and right is a 4.5...

So, anyhow, they put it back to the original size, and from my eye it looks like they did a great job... looks good as new...

And yup, we are going to SuperbCert in NYC in a week or so to look at the eternity bands...

Oh, gosh! I am glad her hand is okay and that her diamond was not damaged in that accident!

The wedding band trip sounds like fun! Do let us know what you find!
