Hi everyone, my mother-in-law has enlisted my help in finding her decent diamond stud earrings for $4,000. She wanted at least 2 carats, but I think she might be pushing it for what she wants to pay for them. I know I checked Whiteflash, and they have some preset diamond studs for a little over $4K for the 1.5 bezel set ones. I figured if I couldn't find something that's 2 carats then at least some metal around the diamond, hence the bezel, would make the diamond look a little bit larger. Here's the link:

What do you think? Do you know of any other diamond stud earrings that could be contenders? Sorry with two young kids, and a limited amount of time spent on Google, I'm not exactly the expert on how to get the most value for the buck. Also do you think two carats would look too gaudy? Sorry for all these questions, but thank you for all the help you can give me. I really appreciate it.

Have you checked the pre-loved forum, diamond bistro? Does she mind a lower color or clarity?

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

I think she doesn't want yellow showing so near colorless would probably do like a G, H, I, J (I've seen some amazing J's here), and since nobody is going to stand right next to her ear without invading her personal space then I would say SI1 and SI2's are probably what she needs to consider as her budget isn't that huge.

Wow, thanks Ladies! I have not been in the loop so it's great that everyone here is willing to share their knowledge with me. I'm going to check out the link right now.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

I just checked, and nothing is in diamond bistro now that would fit her requirements so perhaps I should check from time to time. But thank you very much again for alerting me to that website.

Thanks Kristalulu for the links. I guess my biggest question how well the earrings will sparkle as my mother-in-law says she doesn't want something big and dead looking with no sparkle. I guess it's hard to gauge that factor as the certs aren't posted with them stating all the dimensions of the diamond so I guess that's why I looked at Whiteflash's site in the first place as I'm guessing they at least put something decent for their pre-set earrings, higher quality than what you would find at your local mall. Has anyone purchased any earrings from Israel Rose who can vouch for the quality of the gems without the certs?

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

It depends on your definition of decent.

By my definition, no.
By another person's definition, yes.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

I have never bought from them, I'm sorry. Isreal Rose is estate jewelry, so they probably don't want to put extra money into analysis. Call them and see what they could do for you, whether a video or more pictures... If you know anyone that lives in New york you could see if they could check them out for you.

These are a little over budget but look promising. I would ask for more pictures though:

I would keep checking the Bistro and Ebay. Ask lots of questions, get lots of views in the pictures for comparison. Read ALL feedback and check toolhaus.org for negatives and neutrals and old feedback. Needle in a haystack? Yes. But if you're not in a hurry, something will pop up. Remember you can always buy new settings if the diamonds are pretty enough(I did). In this economy, people are selling heirlooms and favorite pieces because they need the funds. I've seen some of the most beautiful jewelry for sale recently. Some people have parted with pieces they probably never thought they would. I don't usually buy from mass sellers, just individuals(and fellow pricescopers). People who aren't out to make a big profit, just trying to pay some bills.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

As a general rule, if GIA graded G/SI1 one carat diamonds are going for $5k, and someone claims to have stone "graded to GIA standards" that are identical for half that, it's really a dead giveaway.
Something's gotta give.
In general, what gives is the consumer gives too much money to sellers who sell misgraded diamonds in an attempt to make the buyer think they got a bargain.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

Thank you very much for all the suggestions, and I'm going to keep looking for my MIL because if she gets a dud I'm sure she will let me understand her dissatisfaction for the rest of my life. With that said, I'll show her these links to see how she feels about the pricing and with what's out there. I really appreciate everyone chiming in with all the tips and suggestions. Please keep them coming. :)

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

Here is my suggestion...get .75 each and then get diamond halo jackets for them from ID Jewelry. That will give her the option to wear the simple studs or dress them up and make them more blingy! I'd go with the WF pre-set studs in the 4 prong baskets if you want them to be compatible with jackets. I don't see 1.5ctw listed for the 4 prong basket, but since they offer it for the w-prong and bezel, I think they should be able to do the regular basket setting in the 1.5 as well.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

Please keep in mind, Pricescope is a diamond community that values excellent cut diamonds. Those aren't *usually* the ones you find on ebay. There are many people here who know the exact cut % that you need for the most fiery diamond you can get. Those diamonds come with a premium price also. Many of the vendors on here sell those diamonds. However, you will pay more for them and not really have to worry about returning them because they're misrepresented(in essence not wasting any time because they will be gorgeous). What you are looking for in that price range will take a lot of leg work. That also means if you buy from a vendor they are out there to make money, it's their business and profit is their business. Keep that in mind when reading advice from them.

So many ladies on here buy and sift through preowned sites to be able to afford what they normally can't. It takes TIME and is not for the faint of heart because for every one good deal(quality and price) there are so so so many heartbreaks. I don't think you'll get a lot of links to the good deals because they get snapped up. Earrings also make good side stones for three stone rings, you know ;0) Just keep checking the pre owned forum, those at least have been owned by a pricescoper so your odds are better. Not everything gets posted here either so check diamond bistro.com daily, hourly, whatever.

I now have to find some kind of pretty earrings that aren't diamond because my ears are bare....

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

Yeah, I'm aware of the eBay misrepresentation of some diamond sellers trying to hawk things that are supposed to be XYZ value, but it's really much much less. Buying from an individual who can only guess what cut, clarity, and color can be daunting as well. That's probably why I felt it was probably safest to purchase them from Whiteflash as the 1.5 platinum bezel earrings are I color and SI range clarity. My husband says that he likes the simple look of the prongs and not the bezel look so perhaps my MIL can get a 1.5 carat pair in a prong setting and dress it up with suggestions to buy a jacket for it. I, personally, love the halo look on earrings, rings, pendants so I just need to drive down to where my MIL and show her all the links here and on Whiteflash to give her an idea of what she might like. She might like the bezel look or she might go for the simple studs in prongs and dress it up with a jacket or not depending on whatever her personal taste is. I really did enjoy the link that someone shared with me:

I have some .40 diamond studs from Facets that I would love to order some jackets for later down the line. What sites do you like for the jackets?

Thank you very much for the replies. It makes it much easier to click and look at your suggested links then to spend all day looking for them myself.

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

I second DS's suggestion of getting her the 0.75ct stones with the jackets and the ones from IDJ have been very popular. I believe these are the ones for 0.75ct stones but the photo isn't showing on my computer for some reason:
http://idjewelryonline.com/product_info.php?products_id=20143

For your studs, are they 0.40 total weight or 0.40 each? I have studs that are 0.44 each and I bought the 3-pointer jackets for 1/2ct studs and I am very happy with them (they cost a tad less than the ones I posted above for larger stones):
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-bgd-diamond-studs-upgrade-0-88ctw-with-idj-jackets.175591/

Or, if yours are 0.20 ct each, you could go with the jackets for 1/4ct studs. Just give IDJ a call and they will help you buy the best pair for you, since they don't show all of the options on their website. You could also ask them to help you find a pair of pricescope-quality studs for your MIL if you don't end up purchasing with WF. Their prices are very reasonable and there are lots of beautiful pieces of jewelry floating around on here from them!

Re: Can one purchase decent 1.5-2 carat diamond studs for $4

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I think the jackets will pair nicely with the diamond earrings. Now I just have to schedule some time with MIL to look at the diamond studs and jackets. Thank you very much again for the very helpful suggestions and links!
